Chelsea signed more than ten new players in this summer transfer window and most of them under the age of 21. The Blues have focused more on young talents rather than high-profile players. However, Chelsea also signed some high-profile players this summer including Joao Felix, Jadon Sancho, and Pedro Neto. With the huge number of players coming into the squad, some existing players left the club as well. Romelu Lukaku also left the club to join Napoli, along with Raheem Sterling who joined Arsenal on loan.
According to reports, another Chelsea forward David Datro Fofana was about to leave Chelsea to join the Greek side, AEK Athens. But that deal collapsed at the very last moment after the Greek side failed to seal the deal with the striker. Fofana was one of the players who wanted to leave the Blues this summer for more playing time. However, still no final destination for the 21-year-old as of now.
David Datro Fofana joined Chelsea in the January transfer window, last season, from Molde. The 21-year-old made only 4 appearances in the second half of the 2022/23 season. Last season, the Ivory Costain completed two different loan spells with Union Berlin and Burnley respectively. With Union Berlin, David Datro Fofana scored 2 goals in his 17 appearances across all competitions. And with English side Burnley, Fofana made 15 appearances and scored 4 goals during this time. At the start of this season, Fofana came back to the Chelsea squad. However, it is expected that the 21-year-old is about to leave the club and probably move to a new club on loan.
The deal of David Datro Fofana to AEK Athens collapsed
Greek side, AEK Athens, were very interested in signing the 21-year-old and reached Chelsea with a loan offer. The Greek side wanted to sign him on loan with an option to buy permanently in the future, on a transfer fee of £20m. David Datro Fofana was also interested in joining the Greek side. However, the deal collapsed as Athens were not able to complete the move before the end of the Greek transfer window. As the Greek side failed to come to a final decision before the closure of the Greek transfer window, eventually the deal collapsed.
Fofana is someone, the Blues have been desperate to offload. However, as the Athens deal collapsed, right now, Chelsea have to find a solution for David Datro Fofana, otherwise, the 21-year-old will be stuck in their squad. There seems to be no chance for David Datro Fofana to get any playing time in the current Chelsea squad, under Enzo Maresca.
