27-year-old England international finds it hard to get sufficient playing time

Chelsea are still spending money in the summer transfer market to bring in more players. Chelsea appointed Enzo Maresca as the new head coach of the team. Maresca is bringing players according to his needs. Since the club’s takeover, the board has spent more than 1 billion in the transfer market to sign some of the best young talents. This season, the board is following the same strategy and spending a huge amount on newcomers. This leaves questions about the future of some players. One such player is Ben Chilwell, who is facing uncertainty about his future with Chelsea.

Ben Chillwell joined Chelsea back in the 2020 summer transfer window from Leicester City by signing a five-year contract with a transfer fee of close to 45M. The first season was special for the English international as he was able to make 42 appearances for the Blues and secured 11 goal contributions. But the second season was tough for the 27-year-old and appeared only 13 times in the whole season. However, Ben Chillwell was able to get more playing time in the 2022/23 season when he made 30 appearances for Chelsea. And the last season was not as good enough as injuries kept him out from the football.

But Ben Chilwell always tried his best to deliver his hundred percent on the pitch and his dedication has kept him in the England squad since 2018.

Is the future of Ben Chilwell with Chelsea questionable?

Since his joining in 2020, Ben Chillwell has gone through under the supervision of six managers before the newly appointed Enzo Maresca. So, it’s also a roller coaster ride for Chilwell under different managers. Sometimes he was treated as the main man for the left-back position, while sometimes he was used as a back-up. Last season former Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino used both Marc Cucurella and Ben Chilwell for the left-back position. So, Chilwell was able to get playing time, despite the emergence of young talents.

But things are changing under the newly appointed Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca. Five matches into the Enzo Maresca era, Ben Chilwell only appeared a couple of times for Chelsea and both the them came off the bench. Till now Enzo Maresca used Levi Colwill and Malo Gusto for the left-back position in all the Pre-season friendlies. Apart from these two Chelsea have more options for the left-back position and one such option is the Euro 2024 winner with Spain Marc Cucurella. Well, now it’s the pre-season campaign going on but the clock is ticking and the Premier League is in the corner.

So, not getting sufficient playing time under a new boss could lead to a huge problem for the English international. Ben Chilwell always was a key player for Chelsea since his joining in 2020 but that scenario could change under Enzo Maresca. So, at this moment, the future of Ben Chilwell with Chelsea looks uncertain in the future.
