A new-look Arsenal if proposed swap deal with FC Barcelona goes ahead

Arsenal Barcelona, Six Sports

Arsenal are on the verge of witnessing a major squad overhaul in the summer. Moreover, new developments are coming out of the Emirates that the Gunners are looking to sign a swap deal with Spanish giants FC Barcelona. Arsenal require a lot of signings, as are demanded by manager Mikel Arteta. However, amidst their transfer plans, one of the Arsenal players has attracted special attention from Barcelona.

Arsenal center-back Gabriel Magalhaes is reportedly being targeted by Barcelona, who are ready to offer a swap deal for the Brazilian. Arsenal could further benefit from the proposed swap deal as the Catalans are willing to include Riqui Puig, Neto and Memphis Depay. Given the names mentioned, Arsenal’s attack would be reinforced if the a deal takes place. We take a look at the Gunners’ probable line-up if the swap deal happens.

Possible Arsenal starting line-up post Barcelona swap deal: Goalkeeper

Arsenal already have one of the most exciting goalkeepers of English football in Aaron Ramsdale. The 23-year-old has cemented his place in the Arsenal XI since signing for them. Moreover, in his 29 appearances for Arsenal so far, Ramsdale has managed am impressive 15 clean-sheets.

Though Barcelona have included their back-up shot-stopper Neto in the deal, it looks he would have the same role at Arsenal. Ramsdale continues to impress, with Neto approaching the twilight of his career. Therefore, no change here as Ramsdale keeps his starting spot.

As Barcelona want Gabriel from Arsenal, major changes could be seen in this department. Gabriel has only improved since joining Arsenal, but the Gunners are well equipped to cope-up with his exit. Ben white is no doubt an absolute solid defender who has formed a sublime partnership with Gabriel. But Arsenal need not splash money to sign the Brazilian’s replacement as they already have one.

William Saliba is the answer, who is currently out on loan at Marseille. Not only Saliba is on loan, the 21-year-old centre-back is impressing as well. Furthermore, there are reports that Arteta has agreed to include Saliba in his next season’s plans. So there’s enough stability in the backline, as Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kieran Tierney take the full-back positions. Tomiyasu has impressed quickly at right-back, while Tierney has been a constant performer as well.

Arsenal’s midfield has improved massively since Thomas Partey’s signing. Though the Ghana international failed to deliver in his debut season, Partey is finally living up to his expectations. The midfielder was in scintillating form this season, before a thigh injury stopped his progress at the club. Moreover, it looks as if the injury has ended his season as well. But Arsenal are targeting Ruben Neves of Wolves in the summer to add to their depth.

However, Neves seems to be a common target of Arsenal and FC Barcelona. But Arteta’s firm stance on Neves, and Barcelona’s poor financial condition could see the Portuguese midfielder ending up at Arsenal. Martin Odegaard needs no justification as the Norwegian is in top form since making his move from real Madrid to Arsenal permanent. This completes, what we can call Arsenal’s ‘dream midfield’ of Partey-Odegaard-Neves.

Finally the department Arsenal was to strengthen massively. The Gunners are struggling with their strikers, Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah. Aubameyang left Arsenal as well for Barcelona this January. The North London failed to land his replacement, with deals for either Dusan Vlahovic or Alexander Isak collapsing. Barcelona however could provide a solution to Arsenal with sending Memphis Depay to Premier League.

Depay was in some form before joining Barcelona, and continued to impress for the Catalans as well. However, his injury problems and Aubameyang’s powerful start at Camp Nou have limited Depay’s chances at Barcelona. An exit is over the Dutch attacker’s future, with Barcelona ready to help in his his return to Premier League with Arsenal. Meanwhile, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli are firing on all cylinders for the Gunners, and should flourish on either sides of Depay.
