Arsenal drop points in the Premier League title race after draw at Everton after a controversial penalty decision.
Everton drew at home against Arsenal
Everton‘s Illiman Ndiaye scored a penalty in their 1-1 draw against Arsenal on Saturday. Moreover, the Gunners have now dropped more points in the race for the Premier League title.
Ndiaye scored his seventh goal of this campaign on the weekend. He is the top goalscorer for the Toffees in this season. The referee called a foul after Myles Lewis-Skelly’s challenge on Jack Harrison and gave a penalty.
Leandro Trossard scored just before half-time, but they were unable to maintain the lead for long. And then conceded the equaliser in the second half through a penalty.
Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli were on the bench, with a view to facing Real Madrid. Although, they came off the bench in the closing stages of the fixture.
They will take on the Spanish giants in the first leg of the UCL quarter finals on Tuesday. The first tie will take place in north London. Real will host the second leg in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium next week.
The league leaders Liverpool also dropped points after their clash against Fulham on Sunday. Fulham were great in their 3-1 win over the Reds on the weekend. There’s still a 11 points lead for Arne Slot’s side over the London club in the title race.
Everton’s performance
Throughout the first 45 minutes, Mikel Arteta’s side had the control of the game.
However, Everton had more possession in the second period. In the meantime, Trossard scored following a miscommunication between the goalkeeper (Branthwaite) and Idrissa Gueye.
Trossard took his chance on their mistake to open the scoring. Lewis-Skelly brought down Harrison and a spot kick was awarded to the home team. Ndiaye slotted in from six yards to even the score.
Moyes’ side will have a tough run of games ahead. In the coming weeks, they will take on Nottingham Forest, Man City and Chelsea.
