Manchester United are strongly interested in signing Ajax star forward, Antony this summer. Former Ajax boss Erik Ten Hag is a very big admirer of the player and he is pushing for his move to Old Trafford. The interest has lessened in the past few weeks as United were focused on other signings. However, Ajax is adamant about keeping the striker at Amsterdam this summer. Ajax consider Antony to be integral to their plans for this season.
Antony joined Ajax in 2020 from Sao Paulo on a five-year deal. He played fantastically under Ten Hag who polished his raw skills and made him a very dangerous player for Ajax. He has amazing ball retention qualities and dribbling skills. Moreover, he is adept at playing long balls forward and also helps them with the build-up of play with shorter passes.
Antony also helps Ajax out defensively as well. He has a lot of intensity while pressing and is supremely adept at man marking. He does a lot of recoveries and pass interceptions for Ajax as well. His man-marking skills are not just pure stamina and physicality, there is a certain rhythm and skill to it. He was Ten Hag’s go-to man to ensure the build-up of play in the final third of the field.
Ajax are fielding numerous offers for Antony
Along with Manchester United, Liverpool have also inquired about the player. However, Liverpool have already signed Uruguayan center forward Darwin Nunez this summer. So it is unlikely that they will go after Antony this summer. Manchester United on the other hand is looking for depth in their attack this summer.
Antony can be a huge boost to the Red Devils this season if they manage to sign him. However, Ajax seems keen on keeping Antony and is trying to price him out of a move this summer. Ajax boss Alfred Schreuder is adamant about keeping Antony at Amsterdam. In a recent interview with ESPN, He spoke up about the club’s stance on Antony:
“It is clear that we want to keep that boy. I think he still has a contract until 2025. I really want to work with him; he knows that, and the club knows that too,”
However, Ten Hag’s strong relationship with Antony will keep Manchester United on a strong place to sign the forward this summer but it will not be easy for them. Ajax has asked for a £70 million transfer fee to prise him away from Amsterdam. But, Manchester United are not willing to pay such a a huge amount for the forward
