India’s Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane revealed that former captain Rahul Dravid had told him not to worry too much about getting selected to the Indian team as it will come automatically if he keeps performing well. Rahane will be playing the upcoming World Test Championship final(WTC), followed by the test series in England.

Rahane made his first-class debut in 2007 but it was only four years later that he played his first international match. His Test debut eventually came only in 2013. He was known as a prolific run-scorer in the domestic circuit, scoring 1089 runs in his second Ranji Trophy season to lead Mumbai to their 38th title. He has been the most dependable batsman for India over the years, his performance and stats in test cricket across the globe are just commendable.

While he has not played a limited-overs match for India since February 2018, Rahane remains an integral part of the Test team. Under his leadership, India was able to defend the Border-Gavaskar trophy earlier this year in Australia.

Dravid’s advice for Rahane:

Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane recalls an incident when former Indian skipper Rahul Dravid gave him a piece of advice that worked in his favor. Rahul Dravid is a legend of the game, the country won laurels under his leadership. He is the only captain to win a test series in England in 2007.

During a domestic tour in 2008-09, while playing against the south-zone in Chennai Rahane scored some runs (165 and 98) that game and it was then when Rahul Dravid witnessed his brilliance and came up to him and said- “I’ve read about you a lot, you are scoring a lot of runs. As a player, it is very natural that you will start expecting an India call-up. All I would tell you is to keep on doing what you’ve been doing.”

Rahane & Dravid

Getting a call for the Indian team is a dream for any upcoming cricketer and so was it for Ajinkya Rahane. This is what cricket veteran Dravid had to say – “You keep focussing on that and India call-up will come automatically. Don’t run after it, it will follow you.

Rahul Dravid is a legend of the game, he has seen a lot of ups and downs in his career. Rahane has always looked up to him as his role model, Here is what Rahane had to say about Dravid-

“Getting that advice from someone like Rahul Bhai really motivated me a lot. That inspired me a lot. He has seen a lot of ups and downs. I got another thousand runs next seasons and two years after that, I was selected.”

Recently Rahul Dravid has been appointed as the head coach for team India that will be heading to Sri Lanka to play a limited-overs tour, while on the other hand, Ajinkya Rahane is currently in England with the rest of the team preparing for the final of the World Test Championship, in which India face New Zealand at the Ageas Bowl from June 18 to 22.
