An era of Indian Cricket comes to an abrupt end

Kohli, Six Sports

Fans are taken aback after Virat Kohli tweeted his decision to step down as the Indian captain in Tests. Back in 2021, Kohli had shared a similar message where he announced that the ICC WT20 in UAE will be his final assignment as the T20 skipper.

The series of shocks continues

Soon after the disastrous WT20 campaign, the BCCI felt the need for a single leader in the white-ball format and decided to replace Kohli with Rohit Sharma as the leader in ODIs and T20Is. And Kohli’s shocking decision to quit captaincy in the longest format of the game a day after the loss at Newlands brought an unforeseen culmination to an era.

Kohli ended his journey with numerous accolades and records to his name. He surpassed legends like Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni to be India’s most successful Test captain both in terms of the number of victories and win percentage. He is 4th on the list of international captains behind Graeme Smith, Ricky Ponting, and Steve Waugh who have won the maximum number of Test matches as skippers.

A look back to Captain Kohli’s several accomplishments

Under Kohli’s leadership, India became the runners-up in ICC Champions Trophy in 2017 and semi-finalists in ICC World Cup 2019. He and his troops also were the finalists of the inaugural edition ICC WTC. Team India became the numero uno in Test rankings under Kohli.

He was also the first Indian captain to have ever won a Test series down under. The triumph against Australia in 2018-19 will definitely remain the biggest highlight of his career as a captain.

Tributes poured in soon to congratulate Virat Kohli for his colossal contribution to Indian cricket. Fellow teammates to former veterans to numerous fans, everyone came together to bid farewell to a glorious chapter in the world of cricket.

Kohli will be seen back in action against the Proteas in a 3 match ODI series. All Kohli supporters will pray to witness the master back at his best. With the burden of captaincy off, the modern-day legend will look to play carefree and revive his sublime form in the upcoming matches.
