Newcastle star Anthony Gordon says that he almost joined Chelsea. It was back in 2022, he was desperate to join the Blues.
THE STORY BEHIND THE TRANSFER
Chelsea appointed Thomas Tuchel as in charge in 2022. Anthony wanted to work with Thomas as soon as he took up the head coach in the new year.
At that time, England must beat Greece to have the chance of promotion back to the top tier of the Nations League.
Anthony Gordon has revealed that he was ‘desperate’ to join the management of Thomas Tuchel. In 2022, he could not wait to work with the newly appointed England coach.
The winger said a move from Everton to Stamford Bridge was “quite close”. But it didn’t happen.
But the thing was, Everton rejected a bid from Chelsea around £40 million for Gordon in August 2022. However, Tuchel was sacked a month later.
Gordon said about his failed move that it was quite close. He was waiting for Tuchel to take up the job after being in the English squad.
Gordon was desperate to go to time and work. He thought he would suit Tuchel’s play style.
He was ready for the Chelsea transfer. However, Everton was not. It could have been a big opportunity for him at Chelsea.
Gordon also had a say on the mass withdrawal of players. It occurred in the England squad by Carsley. He firmly believed that would have been ignored if Tuchel already started in the job.
England captain Harry Kane told ITV Sport that the national team is the primary objective. The England captain is still disappointed with the few decisions. Still, Gordon stayed with the group despite coming off with a hip problem during Newcastle’s win at Nottingham Forest.
ANTHONY GORDON REGRETS ABOUT NOT JOINING
This young English lad eventually had to join Newcastle in January 2023. It was four months after the Blues sacked Tuchel. Moreover, he then went on to earn 10 England caps under Gareth Southgate and Lee Carsley.
He is now still relishing the prospect of what could have been if he joined Chelsea. He would have been an ideal fit for the German coach.
Gordon was a prized asset at Everton during the summer of 2022. He attracted the glances of many clubs. They were impressed after he was working for a Toffees side that had successfully battled against relegation.
Chelsea, also at that time was in pursuit of a hard-working winger. The club had already been taken over by the consortium fronted by Todd Boehly. Todd appointed himself as the interim sporting director for that summer transfer window.
Eventually, Everton had to make a permanent deal with Newcastle for £45 million in the winter of 2023. Tuchel was the main man to be appealed for the England international.
It seemed that Tuchel had already taken matters into his own hands. He spoke to Gordon after the Everton-Chelsea back in 2022.
Tuchel spoke to him after the game when he shook Gordon’s hands. Gordon was happy with meeting him. Tuchel said some complementary things to him.
It was quite an appreciative moment. Even after missing that Chelsea opportunity, Gordon still looks forward to teaming up with Tuchel. He even admitted to not having an in-depth idea about Thomas Tuchel’s plans.
Anthony Gordon ended up joining Newcastle United in 2023. The Englishmen have recently been linked with a move to Liverpool.
It could have been a shocker if Gordon joined Tuchel back then. However, Gordon has yet to replicate his club on the international.
