Unai Emery’s Aston Villa is flying in the Champions League. The Premier League side secured the Champions League position for the first time since 1983 after finishing the league in fourth place in the last season. And it was a great start for Unai Emery’s men as Aston Villa has won all three matches in the Champions League so far and is currently sitting at the top of the table. While the whole team is performing brilliantly in the Champions League, one player particularly catches the attention of the media and he is Jhon Duran.
Jhon Duran of Aston Villa is in a great form in this season
Jhon Duran scored seven goals in twelve matches this season across all competitions. The 20-year-old scored four goals in eight matches in the Premier League so far and all of them were coming off as a substitute. Recently Duran scored in Aston Villa’s 2-0 victory over Bologna in the Champions League in this week. The Colombian international scored the winner for Villa after coming from the bench against Bayern Munich. His only goals separated the two sides and Aston Villa ultimately won the match.
There is no doubt that John Duran is in great form and Aston Villa boss Unai Emery is using him more as a super sub in this season. However, against Bologna Duran did start the match for Aston Villa and scored a goal in the second half of the game. Recently Aston Villa extended the contract of John Duran which will keep him at Villa Park till 2030. Aston Villa fans are certainly enjoying the performance of their 20-year-old striker.
Chelsea and Arsenal were once linked with Duran in the summer
Chelsea and West Ham were interested in signing Jhon Duran during the summer transfer window. The Blues were linked with Aston Villa several times for the availability of Duran. However, the 20-year-old remained at the club. On the other hand, the Hammers were also interested in getting Jheon Duran in the squad. But ultimately they signed Niclas Füllkrug from Borussia Dortmund as the new striker. Since the start of the season, Duran has been enjoying his time with Aston Villa. His decision to remain with Aston Villa might just click as he is certainly producing good numbers in front of the goal.
As per the news published by MetroUk, Arsenal were also eager to get Jhon Duran at one point in the summer transfer window. The Gunners were looking for a new number nine in the summer. However, Mikel Arteta then realized there was no need for a new number nine. And the Spaniard was happy with the resources available in the squad. So, Arsenal moved away from the race to sign Jhon Duran.
Jhon Duarn is gradually becoming an influential player in the Aston Villa squad. Other players from the squad are praising his recent performance. Aston Villa midfielder Tielemans discussed his teammate strength on TNT Sports and said,
“Duran has everything. He has technique, he can hold the ball and can flick on. He is an all-round striker.”
Upcoming fixtures for Aston Villa
Aston Villa are now in fourth place in the Premier League with 17 points in eight matches, four points behind the league leader Liverpool, and leveled with Arsenal in terms of points. Villa now will welcome Bournemouth in the Premier League in the weekend. Then they will face Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup later on. Well, Jhon Duran certainly made his first start of the season after being selected for the starting lineup against Bologna in the Champions League. So, the question is will Jhon Duran get more start for the Villa or will he still remain as a super sub in the upcoming fixtures?
