Arsenal Defenders – Top 5 All-time Greats

Arsenal Football Club, one of the England’s legendary teams. Arsenal had one of the best football icons and defenders. Has saw some of the best defensive players and their attributes on the pitch. Their leadership and qualities get inherited by the Academy now as well. Arsenal have produced the likes of Tony Adams, Lee Dixon type of legends for the game.

Legendary Players:

Tony Adams – The undisputed leader
Tony Adams was the undisputed leader for the Arsenal side from 1982 to 2002. He was A One-Man army and stand stood for more than 420 appearances. Having to go through multiple of the field problems. But retired and stayed until the end. Tony Adams was brilliant in the defensive phases heading passing and even gave the team some crucial goals. Arsenal players now also resume their pictures. As they set the discipline standards and the main guidance for the team. Tony Adams was the player who has won more than 4 Premier League 2 Carabao cups and 4 league Cup. He was the part of the team until the end. The players from today’s takes inspiration from him.

Patrick Viera – The midfield rocker placed on the defensive rock. Though primarily Arsenal’s midfielder was often placed as a deep playmaker to bolster the creativity from the back. Viera defensive stability, marking, positioning, defensive awareness. Allowed the team to get more freedom from the back. Arsenal was in that time called the invincible. And the captain of that team is Patrick Viera. Arsenal was constantly uplifted by his vitrine’s mobility and versatility in that time. Patrick is still an impression for most of the teenagers now a days. He was unbelievable as a player and as a captain. He was among the best defensive players from Europe as well.

David ‘O’Leary – The Orchestra from the back
He holds the record for the most consistent player in the Arsenal history. Played then over 700 games and made a appearance between 1975 and 1993. His longevity and consistency were dependable in the Arsenal’s history books. O’Leary was mostly dependent on positioning and defensive awareness rather than going for a more traditional defender. He won the F.A. Cup in 1913 and was the most important members of the squad.

Martin Keown – A Warrior
A player whose quality and consistency were known by everyone. He was known for his physicality and consistency. Keown was a destroyer from the back and has cemented his place in the legendary list. Keown formed a formidable combination with Tony Adams to get the ruthlessness on the pitch. A combination that was cheered enjoyed in the late 1990’s.

Sol Campbell – The defensive rock
This was masterstroke from Arsenal as they bought Campbell from their rival Tottenham Hotspur. As they bought him it was more like a decisive decision which got into many controversial takes. But as growth occurred the Arsenal man proved his worth and was listed on the legendary list.

Honorable mention


While there are many who would be in this list. But there are few who can be on the honorable mention list Lee Dixon, Nigel Winter burn, Kolo Touré is the most mentioned and would make the list in another instances.

Author’s take


Arsenal have quite a long history. And they had many defenders who was on the line every time. The standards of the club make it very clear. That for every player what it is like to wear the club’s badge and jersey. Hence there is the current standards which the big 6 are still mentioning upon. This should be the ideal for each and every player from the team as well as from the academy.
