The Premier League side Arsenal are eager to sign the Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino from Spanish side Real Sociedad in the summer transfer window. The gunners are pushing forward to bring some of the best talents of Europe, Mikel Merino is their new target. The Real Sociedad man was admired by many European giants including Barcelona, Athletico Madrid, and Arsenal.
Merino had an outstanding season with Real Sociedad last season. The 28-year-old scored 8 goals and bagged 5 assists in his 45 matches for Sociedad last season across all competitions. Since his joining the Spanish side back in 2018, the Spaniard continuously delivered brilliant performances at the club level, maintaining about 40 appearances per season for Real Sociedad. The Spaniard is one of the key players in the Real Sociedad squad over the last four to five seasons, delivering his best performance.
Merino’s performance in the Euro 2024 was also noticeable. The Spaniard appeared in all seven matches for Spain in Euro 2024 but mostly came as a substitute later in the game. Mikel Merino scored a last-minute header against Germany to secure Spain the semi-final spot in the Euro 24. Coming off the bench in the 80th minute and finally scoring a free header in the 119th minute of the game, was something different for Mikel Merino. This again brings Merino to the transfer spotlight.
Well, according to the Telegraph, Arsenal were chasing Merino before the start of the Euro 24, so his Euro performance will definitely give more boost to this transfer.
Will Mikel Merino Join Arsenal?
Arsenal are very much eager to bring this 28-year-old midfielder to strengthen the midfield zone on the pitch for the Gunners. Mikel Merino already experienced premier league football, thanks to his one-year loan spell with Premier League side Newcastle in the 2017/18 season. That season was decent for the Spaniard, made 25 appearances for Newcastle but only had 2 goal contributions. But now Mikel Merino is in good form and providing his best on the pitch. The Gunners are hoping that Mikel Merino will be the perfect transfer for the team.
Mikel Merino is a versatile player, who could play as an Attacking midfielder, center midfielder, and also the defensive midfielder position. Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard previously played with Merino during his time at Real Sociedad. No doubt that if Merino joins Arsenal, this pair will be vital for the Gunners.
The Spanish side Real Sociedad may ask for about 20M for the Spaniard if Arsenal want to sign him in the summer. Barcelona and Athletico Madrid are also chasing to sign Mikel Merino in the summer. But the gunners are hoping that they could land the Spaniard at Emirates.
