Arsenal star talks about his nation’s Footballer of the year award

Arsenal star Granit Xhaka has opened up about winning the 2022 ‘Swiss Footballer of the Year Award’. The Swiss midfielder has been a key player for the Gunners in this campaign. He has featured in all of the league games except one in 2022, impressing by his performances and gaining the trust of Mikel Arteta.

The 30-years old is one of the eldest members of Arteta’s squad who plays between two center backs and acts as a shield. He is also responsible for starting a counterattack. Gunners sit at the top of the Premier League table with 5 points difference between first and second place Manchester City. Xhaka has started in all of the 19 league games played this season, showcasing his importance.

Xhaka wins ‘Footballer of the year award’

Xhaka’s impressive performances for the Gunners didn’t go unnoticed. He was awarded the ‘Footballer of the Year’ award by the Swiss Football Association on Monday.

This isn’t the first time he won this award. He previously won this award in 2017 before winning it for the second time this year.

After the award ceremony, Xhaka sent a message to his fans through an Instagram post with a caption that said:

“Very proud to be named Switzerland player of the year 🙌 Big thanks for the support – it really means a lot ❤️

He has truly found himself again after being stripped of the armband by Arteta in 2019. He is now an undisputed starter under the same manager. However, he has also been a key player for the Swiss International team. He captained all four of their games in the FIFA World Cup 2022.

He helped them to reach the knockout stages but their journey came to an end after a 6-1 loss to Portugal in the round of 16.
