La Liga president Javier Tebas has revealed that Barcelona could have kept Lionel Messi if they had opted to tick two options. The Catalans lost one of their greatest players this summer as they failed to offer a new contract to Messi. That’s because Barcelona was already in huge debt and had no possible way of keeping Messi this summer.

Following which Lionel Messi left Barcelona for free and joined Paris Saint-Germain as his new club. But speaking in an interview, Javier Tebas has said Barcelona had options to keep Lionel Messi at the club.

The Catalans signed two forwards this summer who were free agents, Memphis Depay and Sergio Aguero. However, despite not having to pay the transfer fee, the club has to pay their salary which is quite an amount. And that in current financial state of Barcelona is extra debt.

The second option that could have kept Lionel Messi at the club is Barcelona signing the CVC deal. The La Liga president had brought on an offer for the Spanish clubs which would have seen them getting approximately 270 million. And in return, CVC will be getting 10% of La Liga’s business and TV rights for the next 50 years.

Listing to that offer the top three La Liga clubs, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid rejected it. However, according to Javier Tebas, Barcelona’s president was ready to sign on the deal as he had personal talks with Joan Laporta. But Laporta decided otherwise after discussing it with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, as per Tebas.

If Barcelona had signed the CVC deal and had not brought on Memphis Depay and Sergio Aguero then they could have kept Lionel Messi. However, all that is past now as the Catalans are now struggling without their main man.

Barcelona struggling without Lionel Messi this season

Lionel Messi was the main man in the Barcelona team for the last few years and it is seen and known by all. The Argentine was the man who carried the broken Catalans in all these previous years. And as Messi left Barcelona all the wounds which were covered are now open to see for all.

Currently, Barcelona sits last in the Champions League group after losing two consecutive games, which is their worst start. While in La Liga they sit 9th in the table after playing 7 games this season. We can clearly see how Messi leaving the club has affected the team’s performance. While Ronald Koeman is out of tactics this season as his saving man in the upfront is missing. If the club has any plan to save the downfall then they have to implement it fast before the future turns dark.
