According to several reports, Barcelona might be considering signing Manchester United forward Edison Cavani on loan in January. The Catalans were linked with the Uruguayan in the summer transfer window. But ultimately Cavani decided to continue at Manchester United signing a new one-year contract.
Edison Cavani joined the red devils as a free agent in 2020 as his contract ended with Paris Saint-Germain. The French giants refused to hand a new contract to Cavani as the club thought he is past his prime and will slow down the team’s attack. But joining Manchester United, Edison Cavani proved that wrong as he scored 17 goals last season in 39 appearances.
United signed the Uruguayan on a one-year deal as they wanted to test his performance for one season. And on May 2021, the club extended his contract by one year making him stay until June 2021. However, Edison Cavani was on his way out of the United camp this summer as Barcelona were linked with him. While Cavani decided to stay as United boss considered him an important part of the squad.
But seeing current times at Manchester United, Edison Cavani seems to not have been considered as the main man at the upfront. And that’s because the red devils signed Cristiano Ronaldo this summer for a price of 15 million. While the Portuguese on his United return after 12 years as already impressed in the forward position. As a result, Cavani might see less game time than he had in the last season.
Following Edison Cavani’s current situation Barcelona are thinking of signing the forward on a short-term loan. As per reports, Barcelona will approach Cavani in the January transfer window and offer a contract until the end of the season.
Do Barcelona need the signing of Edison Cavani?
Barcelona this summer signed three new forwards Memphis Depay, Sergio Aguero, and Luuk de Jong. While lost their club legend, Lionel Messi, this summer with Antoine Griezmann following him. And we can see how the current Barcelona side is struggling as they miss Messi on the pitch. However, Memphis Depay has somehow managed to stable the forward position in terms of scoring.
But both Sergio Aguero and Luuk de Jong seem to be a burden for the Catalan side. Aguero joining Barcelona this summer is yet to make his debut, as he is out suffering an injury. While Luuk de Jong scored his first goal for Barcelona against Levante after struggling a lot. It seems the dutchman is finding it hard to cope up with the Barcelona playing style.
Following this, the Catalans are thinking of a forward addition as the January transfer window nears. And Barcelona has already identified Edison Cavani for the job. If the Uruguayan joins the Catalan side he would be playing with the duo of Depay and Ansu Fati.
