Ronald Koeman’s wish to bring Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum to Barcelona might take a pause as they need to sell the flop Miralem Pjanic in order to free up some space to bring the Dutchmen at Camp Nou.
According to Sport, the former Dutch coach will have to offload a midfielder in order to bring another, and in order to do so, he is willing to sell the Bosnian International Pjanic.
Wijnaldum has played a crucial part in the Liverpool team since his arrival at the club. Jürgen Klopp brought Wijnaldum from Newcastle United for £23million in the Summer of 2016. Since his arrival, he has made 225 appearances for the club and scored 22 goals. This includes the 2 he scored in the infamous 4-0 comeback against Barcelona in the 2019 Champions League Semi-Finals.
Liverpool will also look to freshen up their squad after their disappointing run in the current Premier League season and this might be a small step to rebuild the squad. Gini Wijnaldum’s contract with Liverpool will come to an end this summer and he might be leaving the club on a free transfer after the end of this season.
Will the Red’s offer a new contract to the Dutchmen:
Liverpool would be willing to bring some fresh energy to their squad this summer and in order to do this, they will have to release some players from the squad. It looks unlikely that the Premier League Champions will offer a new contract to Wijnaldum as he has already been linked with the former Dutch coach, who has good terms with Gini while he coached him in the Dutch team.
Next up for the Champions is a trip to north London as they meet Arsenal in their next match after the International break is over and then laying ahead is a trip to Spain to face Real Madrid for the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. It would be interesting to see how the Reds line up in these crucial matches as both the matches just have a gap of 3 days between them.
