BBL 21-22: Maxwell’s ton in vain as Philippe leads Sixers to a win

, Six Sports

Glenn “The Big Show” Maxwell may have come up with his first BBL hundred and smashed his 100th six, but it was Josh Philippe, who ruined his party by missing his century just narrowly but guiding his team home successfully at MCG.

It was Melbourne Stars vs Sydney Sixers at the former’s home ground in MCG. The Stars didn’t have a good day with the bat in their opening game this season, as they were bundled out for a paltry 61 runs. This was their second straight defeat to the Sixers. Leading his side, Maxwell smashed 103 off 57 balls and posted a total of 177/5 for the Sixers to chase.

But, the total wasn’t enough as Josh Philippe replied brilliantly with the bat as well, scoring 99 not out off 61 balls, falling short by just a run to complete his first-ever century.

Innings Story of the Sydney Sixers

The Sixers got into a spot of bother when they lost James Vince (9) early on in the chase. But, it was skipper Moises Henriques and Josh Philippe who took the visitors to 84 runs without further casualty by smashing a couple of huge sixes.

Although Sixers soon lost Henriques (29) after Adam Zampa claimed his wicket, Philippe continued with his sublime form and came up with his half-century, his third of the tournament as he continued his sensational domestic form.

During his innings, he got hit on the neck while trying to play a pull shot off Brody Couch but that didn’t deter him from scoring runs at a brisk pace.

He was well supported by Jordan Silk who played a firecracker inning of 25 not out off 19 balls. They both guided the Sixers to a 7 wicket win with two balls to spare.

Innings Story of the Melbourne Stars

In the first innings, Melbourne Stars were put in a tough spot as they lost 2 early wickets and the score was 6/2. That’s when Maxwell stepped in and played a captain’s knock. The early wickets were those of Marcus Stoinis (3) and Englishman Joe Clarke (0).

“The Big Show” might also have gone cheaply for 15 had it not been for Lloyd Pope who dropped his catch at fine leg.

But, the Stars couldn’t get going in the powerplay and scored just 12/2 at the end of it beating the Hobart Hurricanes lowest total in the powerplay. Maxwell was supported by Nick Larkin and they stitched together the innings, taking the team to 59 before Larkin was claimed by the experienced Dan Christian.

It took just 19 balls for Maxwell to move from his fifty and score his maiden BBL century- his fourth in T20 cricket, as he took the Stars’ total to nine runs an over, eventually falling at 103 in the second last over.

It was a double hundred day for Maxwell as he also brought up his record of sixes to a 100 and became the second batter behind Chris Lynn to reach the milestone.

The win did put the Sydney Sixers back on top of the BBL|11 points table, but it also gave a sour calf injury to Steve O’Keefe.

The next match for the Sixers will be against the Adelaide Strikers on Tuesday at home while the Stars will battle it out with Hobart Hurricanes in Tasmania to get some much-needed points to stay alive in the tournament.
