The Indian squad will be picked by the BCCI this week and reports are floating around that major players will either make a comeback, be rested, or be dropped from the team.

The series is set to start in the month of February, with the first match to be played on the 6th in Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

The player whose comeback is being highly awaited is Rohit Sharma. After missing out on the South Africa tour, he is set to return for the home series against West Indies. That means KL Rahul will have to bat in the middle-order.

A BCCI source told News9,

Though we haven’t received Rohit’s fitness report from the NCA yet, what we know is he has worked really hard on his fitness and is on course to return to the side. It is important for the team to have your captain and Rohit’s presence will bring a lot more confidence.

Adding further, he said,

West Indies will fly in as soon as they complete their series against England and we are well prepared to host them in our bio-bubbles in Ahmedabad and Kolkata.

Bumrah to get rest while Bhuvneshwar Kumar to be dropped from the team against West Indies

As Bumrah was part of all the matches in the South Africa series, he will be rested ahead of the home series against West Indies.

Mohammed Shami is all set to get back for the Windies series as he was rested for all the three ODIs against South Africa.

According to the source’s explanation,

We have to be very careful in managing the workload of key players as the T20 World Cup is not very far away and IPL is also approaching. It is going to be a bit hectic few months for all of them and we must manage them with precision. Bumrah bowled the most number of overs for India in South Africa and he will likely be given a rest but Shami will return to the squad.

Reports also state that senior pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is all set to miss out on this series as he underperformed in the ODI series against the Proteas.

Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar impressed one and all with their performances and hence will most likely be retained by the team.

The source added,

Shardul and Deepak were excellent. We want multi-skilled players in the team and if they can continue to score runs down the order then it will only allow the team to formulate more expansive tactics in ODIs and T20s.

But, other senior all-rounders like Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja will also miss out on this series as they’re not fully fit.

The bright side to this is Washington Sundar and Axar Patel will join the team. All the one-dayers will be played at Ahmedabad while the T20s would be played at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
