Chelsea added Jadon Sancho from Manchester United on a loan deal with an obligation on the deadline day. The Blues will need to pay only £25m to the Red Devils if the 24-year old performs well.
Jadon Sancho has been a Chelsea fan since childhood. Born in the south London district of Camberwell, he grew up with fellow local prodigy Tammy Abraham. He dreamt of playing at the Stamford bridge, which is now a reality.
The Athletic reveals that the Englishman has accepted a significant pay cut to join his dream club. He was once asked about his favorite player in an interview where he revealed that he grew up as a Blue. He says;
“I’d probably say Frank Lampard. I was a Chelsea fan growing up, I can’t lie! Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard were my favourite players at the time. I just love Frank Lampard and how he played his game; he was so direct and so composed on the ball. I like things like that.”
The 24-year old was linked to Chelsea back in 2022 when he joined Manchester United eventually. The Blues’ did not send a formal bid for the winger when he was in such high demand. His first Premier league goal was against Chelsea at the Stamford bridge when he calmly tucked the ball into the net.
Things turned ugly for the youngster when he had a beef with manager Ten Hag. He was banished from the Dutch manager’s squad eventually and was told to find a new club. The 24-year old hopes to revive his career at the club where his heart lies.
The Fall of a Rising Star at Manchester United
Jadon Sancho was deemed to become one of the future greats of World football. The youngster was one of the hottest prospects in the world when he moved to Man City from Watford. He played with the likes of Phil Foden and Brahim Diaz improving further. He won the U-17 World cup held in India with England in 2017. The young lad made into headlines for his incredible performances.
German giants Borussia Dortmund were quick to notice his talent and snatched him from the Citizen. Dortmund signed him for just £8m and put him straight into the first team. The winger did not take time to impress the fans when he scored a goal and provided two assists against arch rivals Bayer Leverkusen.
His stellar performances earned him a national team call up at the age of 18. He became the seventh youngest player to make his debut for the Three Lions. His market value kept rising after 2019 season when he scored 20 goals and provided 19 assists in just 43 games. His numbers kept rising which prompted Manchester United to sign him for a whopping £73m.
Sancho struggled to adapt at United and endured one of their worst ever seasons in the Premier League. He scored only 3 goals. Soon his performances dropped and allegedly he used to come late for training. Ten Hag took a bold action, removing him from the squad completely until further notice.
Now he has been told that the club no longer require his services, he also hasn’t been called up to the national team since Euros 2021. He will be keen on reviving his career under Enzo Maresca at Chelsea.
What Next for Jadon Sancho?
Sancho will hope to settle quickly at Chelsea. He had a tough time adapting to Premier league football last time, the fans hope it will change this time around.
However, there is a stunning clause in this Sancho deal. The clause states that if Chelsea fail to finish in top 14, he will be returning to Old Trafford next season. He must prove his mettle to the Blues’ boss as there is plenty of competition at the front.
There are talented players like Joao Felix, Mudryk and Pedro Neto who are also hungry for regular play time. The 24-year old must stand out from the rest to assure his spot at the club. It will be a mammoth task ahead for the youngster, he has to embrace it to revive his career.
Many football pundits have questioned his decision of joining Chelsea. They think it is a terrible place to redeem someone’s career. Louis Saha told Betfred that the 24-year old might struggle to get regular game time under Maresca. He says;
“I don’t see why he would be excited to go there and I don’t see him going to Chelsea anyway, but I could be wrong. There’s still space for him on Manchester United’s team, but the manager may want to sell him. I do understand though that Jadon’s looking for a solution to find first-team football elsewhere.”
He is set to make his Chelsea debut on Sunday against Crystal Palace from the bench.
