Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers was full of praise for Chelsea. He talked to the press before the game against the Blues and had plenty of compliments for his opponents.
The Nothern Irishman went against the grain and considered the West London outfit to be superior to Manchester City and Liverpool. They both remain one point adrift of one another going on the final day, and all eyes will be on them in the race for the title. Chelsea, meanwhile sit in third, 18 points behind Liverpool.
“I would go as far as to say Chelsea are the best team we have played this season. When we played them early on in the season, they were at the top of their game. I thought they (Chelsea) were outstanding. Not long after that moment, they lost some players. What I do know is they’ve got an outstanding manager who has done a fantastic job since he’s been there. They’ve got a group of really good players, top, top talents”
A Reasonable Choice?
It is indeed true that Chelsea were one of the meanest sides in the division just before the turn of the new year. When the two sides met in November, the Midlands side were completely outclassed in their own backyard. Injuries to Reece James and Ben Chilwell impeded the progress of the defending UCL winners severely. Thomas Tuchel’s system is very heavily dependent on the wingbacks, and the drop in quality from Chilwell and James to Marcos Alonso and Azpelicueta was quite evident. A number of COVID cases and off the field issues with club owner Roman Abrahomavic selling the club also played a role. Despite this, they played in two domestic cup finals. They even reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League, and almost mounted a superb comeback against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. This is indeed a testament to Thomas Tuchel’s resilience, adaptability and quality.
Overall, one can understand where Rodgers is coming from. He never said they are better than Manchester City or Liverpool, but simply a team which gave them a harder time than the former two. An unorthodox pick, but a justifiable one for sure.
