English League Cup is set to return this week for the quarter-final fixtures. Chelsea travels to Brentford Community Stadium to face Brentford in one of the two all-London fixtures on Wednesday.
The European champions come into the clash after a disappointing 0-0 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Chelsea has won only one of their last four Premier League games. But last time around in the League Cup Chelsea beat Southampton 4-3 on penalties after the game ended 1-1 in extra time. Chelsea faithful will certainly be hoping that they can end their bad run of form.
Brentford has seen their last two league games postponed due to Covid reasons. While in Brentford’s last game, they made an impressive 2-1 comeback win against Watford in the Premier League. The Bees beat Stock City 2-1 in the League Cup round of 16 fixtures. But Brentford will be hoping to cause an upset as Chelsea has some big names missing due to the Covid-19 outbreak at the club.
Chelsea was forced to play on the weekend after their request to postpone the Wolves fixture was declined. But the club will still be without some big names due to the Covid-19 outbreak at the club. The likes of Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner, and Callum Hudson-Odoi will miss out.
The European champions will also be without long-term absentee Ben Chilwell. The crises went from bad to worse as Trevoh Chalobah and Hakim Ziyech were both taken off injured during the weekend Premier League clash against Wolves.
Kai Havertz could be back in the starting lineup after he missed the Wolves clash due to an illness. But his report has now come back as negative. Jorginho is also back in training after missing the Wolves clash but is unlikely to start. While the injuries and Covid infections could mean that Malang Sarr may get a rare start.
Ivan Toney could be back in the starting line-up for Brentford after missing out on the last few games due to the Covid infection. While Ethan Pinnock still remains a major doubt ahead of the clash.
Just like Chelsea, Brentford has a long absentees list. The likes of David Raya, Julian Jeanvier, Joshua Dasilva, and Kristoffer Ajer are all on the sidelines. Zanka is also a minor doubt for the clash. The bees’ forward Marcus Forss is the leading scorer in the League Cup this term with five goals and will be in contention for another start against a much weaker Chelsea side.
