Bryan Gil, the Tottenham winger, has received a call up to the Spain squad to replace the injured Marcos Llorente.

Llorente picked up a thigh injury in Atletico Madrid’s 2-0 La Liga win over Barcelona. The club has confirmed the update of his rehabilitation period.

Atletico has not offered a return date but estimates hint at a three week lay off. Initially, Gil was not part of the squad. However, Llorente’s injury has opened the door for the youngster.

Bryan Gil of Tottenham to feature in Nations League

Bryan Gil is the latest in Luis Enrique’s call-up for the Nations League final phase after the Madrid footballer [Llorente] was injured in the last play of the match between Atletico de Madrid and FC Barcelona,” an official statement from the Spanish Football Federation read.

Luis Enrique confirmed his initial 23-man squad on Thursday. Premier League stars David De Gea, Robert Sanchez, Cesar Azpilicueta, Sergio Reguilon, Marcos Alonso, Rodri and Ferran Torres all made the cut.

Following Llorente’s withdrawal, Gil has been added to that lineup.

Gil joined Tottenham from Sevilla over the summer. He has registered 9 appearances for the North London side during the 2021-22 campaign, contributing an assist in the process.

The 20-year-old has found regular minutes hard to come by at club level. However, he has been called up to the senior team as Spain chase the Nations’ League glory.

Gil has donned Spain colours at every level between U16 and U23. He received his first senior call up back in March as Enrique’s side kicked off their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign.

He will likely start from the bench when Spain take on Euro 2020 winners Italy in the semi-finals of the Nations’ League.
