Chelsea are back at it again! Still keen on Marc Casado, Barcelona’s promising 21-year-old midfielder, the Blues have reignited their interest, reported Cadena SER. Chelsea have reportedly joined the race to attract him from Camp Nou after a previous attempt in the summer.
However, Casado seems delighted enough with Catalonia, and with the level he has brought in the Champions League and La Liga, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has no reason to let his go. Chelsea will have to be brave with the bank account—and perhaps the ragbags—should they want to get their man, with his release clause set at €100m.
The real question, however, is whether Chelsea even need another midfielder.
Casado: The Perfect Midfield General or a Luxury Chelsea Can’t Afford?
It’s undeniable that Casado is a fine talent. He is a deep-lying midfielder and a thinker with vision, composure and the knack of controlling the game – two attributes that are important to Chelsea when recruiting young players. And the manager made a fitting description of the player he managed, ‘incredible’, not something you hear every day even when it comes from a manager.
Nevertheless, Chelsea already have a midfield morgue. It is not a crisis area at all with Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Romeo Lavia and Andrey Santos all battling for starts. However, the Blues’ true worries are elsewhere and include a striker, centre back and goalkeeper.
Expending the fortune on Casado when other areas require consolidation? Buying a Ferrari when there is a leaky roof in your house is impressive, but not practical.
Why Chelsea Should Focus Elsewhere First
Chelsea, to be honest, are not creating many goal opportunities at the moment. It’s a shakier situation with the lot in goal for them right now. It should be a clinical forward.
Also, their defense needs reinforcements. The backline is exposed to injuries, and Thiago Silva is a wise man, but Father Time doesn’t lose. Having a top class centre-back would not be a bad idea.
Then there’s the goalkeeping dilemma. Djordje Petrovic has the looks but so far there has not been a lot of competition. The last line of defence would be solidified with another strong shot stoper.
If, in the event that Chelsea find a solution to all those problems and then still have the cash to burn, a move for Casado is plausible. Until this day, he is a dream, and not a necessity.
