Chelsea have made some great signings this summer. In fact, they were one of the very few teams to have a great transfer window. The Blues have a transfer policy of buying young and rising players. But now they are eyeing to make a move for an experienced world-class player. The Blues are now aiming to sign Alejandro Grimaldo. The 29-year-old left-back is one of the best in his positions. He might be pushing into his 30s soon. But he has a great profile as a player. At the same time, he still has some good years left in the tank ahead of him.
Do Chelsea need a new left-back?
For starters, Ben Chilwell could be leaving the club in January. The 27-year-old is not a part of Enzo Maresca’s plans. They do have Marc Cucurella and Renato Veiga. But, as per thehardtackle, Cucurella has shown signs of being injury-prone. At the same time, Veiga is still too young and yet to become a regular starter. So, Chelsea may be out of quality options in case Cucurella is out. As a result, signing a quality left-back will be a key task for them.
Why Alejandro Grimaldo?
The 29-year-old had a great season last time. Even as a defender, he would have many goal contributions for his side. As per transfermarkt, Alejandro Grimaldo managed to secure 32 G/A in 51 club appearances last season. At the same time, he is also a bit of a set-piece specialist. The left-back is lethal from free-kicks. So signing him won’t just strengthen Chelsea at the back. But, they will also have a certain extra edge in offense thanks to him. It will be interesting to see if the Blues are able to sign him. Leverkusen certainly won’t allow him to leave in January because he remains a key player for them. But perhaps situation could be different next summer.
