Chelsea & Cole Palmer with a slow start after the turn of the year
The England international joined the Blues from Manchester City in summer 2023. He was signed for a fee around โฌ47 million. The impact he has had wasn’t expected by many. He only played 1,483 minutes for Pep Guardiola in all competitions. A few were in doubt whether the Blues had overpaid for a player with very little experience at senior level.
Since then, he has been one of the best players in the Premier League. He has been performing at the highest level since switching sides. And as result, his market value increased from โฌ18 million up to โฌ130 million.
However, since the new year his and his team’s form has been declined. He is the main man making things happen from the midfield. But Chelsea have fallen down from second to seventh since mid December. They’re now fighting for a place in the top four. They will be looking to qualify for the Champions League next season. The clubs poor form has been parallel to their star boy’s performances. He was the one creating magic for them, but now needs help himself.
Since the start of this campaign, Palmer has had 18 goal contributions till December. In 2025, he only had two goal contributions in eight games so far.
Chelsea needs to get Cole Palmer back to his best days
The thing is the west London fans are used to seeing the 22-year-old Englishman creating magic on the field. He has been doing that every matchday since starting for them. He got his side to their best form when very few were counting on them. And that led to an over-reliance on Cole at the Stamford Bridge. But now he is struggling and as a result his club is struggling too.
Although, he hasn’t been failing to perform at his highest from the start. Its just that this year, he has not had much impact that he usually does. He can still finish the season with good numbers. There’s a little drop in form from him. He can still be one of the best Premier League players of the campaign.
But their team performances hasn’t been great either. That has led to frustrations on the field as well. On Saturday, their 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa saw players losing their cool on the pitch. There was a moment between Palmer and Christopher Nkunku in that match. The midfielder lost it at the striker after overhitting a pass himself. The Frenchman was also seen to be unhappy with his teammate for not passing the ball at several occasions. At a point there was a better chance for him in the box but Cole took the shot instead, which got blocked at the end.
Although, now he needs to step up and get back to his best. He will have to contribute if they were to qualify for the Europe’s biggest competition.
Maresca on helping Palmer rediscover his form
The west London side’s manager, Enzo Maresca was asked about helping his star man get back to his potential. He said: “Just continue working in the way he is working.
“The other day, I think yes he had a great chance but overall the performance from Cole…every game we expect goals and assists from him, so it’s difficult.
“He is a human being. In this moment, his performances probably reflect the team’s performances that we struggle to score goals and we need to be a bit more clinical when we get the chances.”

Cole being the main man for his side for a majority of this season, needs to work on himself. He will have to get everything together to help his team in these desperate times. He needs to bring his earlier form to get his team back in the Champions League.
