Chelsea to battle other Premier League sides for Marc Guehi
The Blues and the Toons are set to fight it out for Crystal Palace defender Guehi in the summer.
The 24-year-old is claimed to be as one of the best defenders in the Premier League. He is one of the most talented centre-backs outside of the traditional top-six clubs. His current deal is expiring in 2026. So he could be leaving to a top team in the summer.
Numerous clubs are in the market to look for an experienced defender. The Blues are trying to add some more physical presence in to their young side. While the Magpies have been looking to make changes in that position for quite some time now.
The Eagles centre-back is a former academy graduate of Chelsea. So making a move for him may seem that they might have made a mistake in the past. However, they have already resigned players before such as Romelu Lukaku.
Is Chelsea, the ultimate destination for Marc Guehi?
As per The Mirror, the west London side are keen to sign the Palace star. They hold an edge over any club trying to sign him. The advantage is added in a clause in his contract with the Eagles when they sold him in 2021. The clause being that it will allow them to match any fee or offer from another team.
Newcastle tried signing him last summer as well. But their bids were rejected and eventually they ran out of time. Although, some reports in January suggested that a asking price of around ยฃ40 million will be enough for Palace. It seems that they are willing to let him off for a lower fee. They’re looking to sell him as his contract set to fall in to the final year at the end of this current campaign.
Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool have also reported to be linked with a move for the Englishman. His solid displays at the defensive lines have grabbed a lot of attention. This summer may see plenty of top sides wanting to bring in the centre-back.
His great performances for England at Euro 2024 stated that he is built to step up for a big team. At the age of 24, he is already playing at a high level. At this level, he’ll just keep on improving his game. And that will help him to become more experienced in European football.
Former Ranger’s boss and Chelsea academy coach Michael Beale on Guehi
The England international was a kid from the same south east London estate and primary school as Beale. The former Rangers and Sunderland manager was a leading coach at the Chelsea academy. Guehi was growing up under Micheal’s guidance at the Blues academy.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Beale shared his about his former academy student and how he is doing at the highest level of football.
He said: “His reading of the game and his athleticism gets him a yard on his centre-forward.
“He shows a huge amount of confidence to play on the left side and his technical upbringing from Chelsea means he can use his left foot, albeit he is dominant on his right foot.
“When you see the teams line up, he’s not the biggest centre-back but he has a huge leap.
“Quietly people are realising we have an absolute gem in him.”
