According to a well-renowned journalist, Duncan Castles, Chelsea and Sevilla have accepted the financial terms for Jules Kounde. Chelsea are pursuing the Frenchman since summer and are likely to make a move in January for Kounde. While Antonio Rudiger’s contract expiring in June 2022 explains Chelsea’s move for Kounde.
Moreover, the Blues are experiencing a dip in form and many injuries and absentees due to the COVID outbreak. As a result, they want depth in their defense and Kounde can offer a lot more than that. Many other big clubs like Manchester United and Real Madrid are also interested in signing the Frenchman.
Jules Kounde has established himself as one of the best young center-backs in recent times. Chelsea have a very good defensive record which is a bit disturbed recently. Thomas Tuchel can help Kounde thrive at Chelsea and may as well start playing regularly for the Blues. Jules Kounde can help Chelsea get back to winning ways and restore their defensive structure.
Sevilla are currently 2nd in La Liga above Atletico Madrid and Barcelona. Jules Kounde has been instrumental in Sevilla’s massive improvement since 2019. He has won the Europa League in 2019-20 with Sevilla and was also a part of the French National team which won the Nations League. Duncan Castles had this to tell the Transfer Window Podcast,
“Chelsea are continuing to pursue him. They have continued to make it clear they want to bring him to the Premier League and that they’re interested in doing it in January. Obviously, the financial terms remain fine, they were accepted in the summer.”
What can Jules Kounde offer Chelsea?
Koundé’s natural position is as a right-sided central defender, but he is nimble, athletic, and technically gifted enough to play right-back as well. He performs there with the expertise of a professional full-back, running long, lung-busting runs. However, Koundé isn’t very tall or broad for a central defense being only 5’11,” but he shows tremendous muscle when battling for the ball. Moreover, when chasing the ball, his speed provides him an advantage, and his tremendous leap allows him to win aerial duels.
He makes 0.9 tackles, 0.8 interceptions per game, and also makes 3.1 clearances (stats via whoscored). These stats can only improve under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea. He also has the ability to burst past a few players and create a chance out of nowhere. Moreover, he will give Chelsea players the license to move further forward the pitch to attack.
Jules Kounde has been one of the best defenders in La Liga this season. His efforts are evident with the way Sevilla are playing currently. If he keeps on going this way and joins Chelsea then it will impact his career hugely. However, Chelsea must secure this deal as there are other big contenders in the market who want Kounde’s signature.
Chelsea will have to meet Sevilla’s demands as the Spanish side will also face a great loss and will need to replace Kounde as soon as possible. However, that has not been a problem for Chelsea as Sevilla now awaits a proper deal for Jules Kounde.
