Recently Chelsea have decided to sell two first team players which include Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku and French defender Malang Sarr.
Why Chelsea are selling these players?
The transfer of Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea was a disaster. The Belgian costed the Blues around £93m but his performance didn’t justify the hefty price tag. Although the striker didn’t want to join Chelsea, but his former club Inter Milan sold him to get rid of bad financial conditions.
After the horrendous transfer to Chelsea, Romelu Lukaku became a burden and a hated figure at Stamford Bridge. The Blues were trying to sell him.
Last season, Romelu Lukaku went on a loan to AS Roma. There he had a great season under De Rossi. Before that he also spent another loan spell at Inter Milan.
No one was activating his release clause to sign him permanently. This became a headache for Chelsea until the Partenopei offered him a three-year contract.
In the 2022-2023 season, the Blues bought Lukaku for £97m from Inter Milan. In that season, Lukaku was at the peak of his career. He and Lautaro Martinez led Inter Milan towards lifting the Series A title.
On the other hand, the Blues bought French defender Malang Sarr from OGC Nice on a free transfer. Under the management of Thomas Tuchel, he played some games for Chelsea. He delivered a heroic performance against Sheffield United in a Premier League Match.
At that moment, Antonio Rudiger was the best left center back in Chelsea squad. So, the French defender got less opportunities to prove themselves. After multiple loan spells, Chelsea have decided to terminate his contract.
Stories behind the scenes
According to multiple reports, Inter Milan were forced to sell Lukaku because they were in a bad financial condition. During this time the Blues offered a humongous amount of money to Inter Milan.
Inter Milan grabbed this opportunity and started to revive their financial condition. After coming to Stamford Bridge, Romelu Lukaku opened his book with bangers. The Belgian was delivering masterclass performances week in and week out.
Then a controversial interview released where Lukaku commented bad things about Chelsea and praised his former club Inter Milan. The Belgian striker opened up about his relationship with the Chelsea manager.
There is a twist in this controversial statement. The entire interview was made in Italian language. No club will tolerate this type of action from a player. Same thing also happened with the Blues. Thomas Tuchel immediately side lined the striker.
Next destination for Lukaku and Sarr
Multiple reports are claiming that Lukaku has agreed personal terms with the Italian giant S.S.C Napoli. According to Mirror, Chelsea are willing to sell the Belgian striker for £29.5m. The Blues set a release clause of £38m for the Belgian.
On the other side, Malang Sarr is going to join Ligue 1 side RC Lens. According to multiple reports, his medical tests are being scheduled. Everyone was expecting a massive change in Chelsea squad, but these two players were already on the outgoing list for the Blues.
Future of Chelsea
Chelsea players have started the pre-season training, and they are on a USA tour. Although the players were looking sharp in the pre-season games, but they lacked a clinical finisher. At this moment they are losing a world-class striker like Romelu Lukaku.
At this moment, the Blues need a striker who can convert all the goalscoring opportunities. In 2023-2024 season new Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca guided Leicester City towards Premier League promotion. So, the Italian manager brings a winning mentality in Chelsea dressing room. During past few seasons, the Blues have been lacking a winning mentality.
