Chelsea have renewed their interest in Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa, according to sources at TEAMtalk. The Portuguese shot-stopper attracted pretty strong attention from Manchester United, is back on Chelsea’s radar. Since, the Blues continues to assess long-term options between the posts. With both Premier League giants in the mix, Costa is shaping up to be one of the most in-demand goalkeepers. This will be quite an interesting transfer saga in the upcoming summer window.
Chelsea are continuing to closely monitor 25-year-old Portuguese international Diogo Costa, who has emerged as their top goalkeeping target for the upcoming summer transfer window. The Porto shot-stopper is also attracting interest from Manchester City, who view him as a possible successor to Ederson, should the Brazilian depart. Meanwhile, Manchester United are keeping Costa on their radar as well, amid growing concerns over Andre Onana’s performances this season.
Diogo Costa’s current contract with Porto includes a €75 million release clause. But reports suggest the Portuguese club may be open to negotiating a lower fee. Although his deal runs until the summer of 2027, Porto could be willing to strike a deal below the buyout figure if the right offer comes in. Thus, potentially paving the way for a summer move amid growing interest from Chelsea, Manchester United, and Manchester City.
Chelsea gearing up for upcoming season
Despite being in the midst of a potentially successful campaign, Chelsea are already laying the groundwork for the upcoming summer transfer window. The Blues are currently just one point shy of a Champions League spot in the Premier League standings. Now, they are focusing on reinforcing key positions—one of the main priorities being the goalkeeping department. Strengthening between the posts is seen as crucial to their long-term plans. Since, they aim to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level.
Robert Sánchez currently holds the No. 1 spot in Enzo Maresca’s starting XI. However, the 27-year-old goalkeeper has come under scrutiny for several high-profile mistakes this season. While he remains first choice for now, his inconsistency has been raising questions about Chelsea’s long-term plans in goal. Thus, further fueling the club’s interest in potential replacements like Diogo Costa.
Chelsea made a move for Diogo Costa last summer, with the club reportedly approaching Porto in late May to explore a potential deal. Although a transfer didn’t materialize at the time, the Blues have maintained their interest in the Portuguese goalkeeper. Hence, they could return with a renewed bid in the upcoming window.
Manchester City also showing interest on the Portuguese
Manchester City also showed interest in Diogo Costa during the same period last summer. The reigning Premier League champions were reportedly keeping tabs on the Portuguese goalkeeper as they considered long-term options for their goalkeeping department.
Chelsea’s attempt to sign Diogo Costa last summer ultimately fell through, leading the club to pivot toward other options. The Blues went on to secure the services of Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal instead. While Jorgensen has joined the squad, Chelsea’s continued interest in Costa suggests they’re still searching for a long-term solution in goal.
As reported by TEAMtalk in March, Chelsea are still keeping a close eye on AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan. The 29-year-old France international is viewed as a more budget-friendly alternative to Diogo Costa, with Milan reportedly open to offers in the region of €40 million (£34.4m or $46m). Maignan’s experience and proven quality make him an appealing option. Since, the Blues evaluate their goalkeeping targets for the summer transfer window.
