As it appears, Chelsea is reportedly speeding up their preparations for the upcoming season. Chelsea’s management has already gone into talks with alternative options after ongoing speculation that Jadon Sancho may not be part of the club’s future. And their main target is Real Betis player Jesus Rodriguez to replace him.
Why does Chelsea want Jesus Rodriguez?
Even at 19 years of age, Rodriguez has played somewhat remarkably well throughout this current season. He has played 17 games since his debut for the club in October. And he scored one and provided two assists. At first glimpse of these statistics, they may not seem extraordinary. However, his on-field potential and promise are clear. He helped Real Betis to win their match against Real Madrid, as he was the man to win the penalty. That ultimately secured a 2-1 win for his team.
Betis themselves acquired Antony on loan, meaning he has also played on the left flank, though he mostly plays as a right winger. This would be a big asset to Chelsea, especially when there is an ongoing question mark over Sancho’s performance for them.
The Disciplinary Drama with Jadon Sancho
Now the situation with Sancho is honestly just messy and exhausting. It wasn’t just a little falling out between Erik Ten Hag and Manchester United.
As everybody knows, he had a massive falling out with the Red Devils manager. Basically, Sancho called him out publicly over lying about training performances. And then things went downhill quickly. He was completely frozen out of the United squad. He was not even spared the use of the first team facilities, and he remained out for months.
Chelsea took a gamble on bringing him in on loan, hoping to sort out his head. He has had some good moments for them, and to be fair as well. There are still rumors that he isn’t exactly lighting the world on fire in training, and there is some talk behind the scenes about his attitude again. The thing is, in the long term, maybe he’s a bit too much hassle for Chelsea. That’s why the club may not want to spend time trying to fix Sancho and instead go get someone fresh like Jesus Rodriguez, who is hungry to prove himself.
At the end of the day, mentality matters just as much as talent, so The Blues have to have players who are all in all season, not the ones they have to babysit all season long.
The situation with Jesus Rodriguez
Chelsea is very serious about signing Rodriguez. If we follow the recent reports, his contract includes a release clause worth 42 million euros. And if Chelsea wants to keep Jadon Sancho for another season, it might cost them anything from 20 million euros to 25 million euros. However, given that the club may want to introduce new energy and new ideas, it is possible the club could choose Rodríguez over Sancho.
So what’s next?
Of course, this won’t be an easy process. Liverpool and Arsenal are also interested in signing him. So if the Blues are serious about taking him. Negotiations are still in their preliminary stages, but it is feasible for a fast negotiation process that could see the talented young Spanish winger play his part ahead of the new season’s kickoff at Stamford Bridge.
