Chelsea have completed the signing of 18-year old prodigy Marc Guiu from Barcelona. The striker is another fine product of the La Masia academy.
The Blues have decided to trigger Guiu’s release clause. Subsequently, they will be paying €6 million to the Blaugrana. New manager Enzo Maresca thinks highly of the 18-year old striker. Moreover, even Guiu is keen to play in the Premier League.
Chelsea had a very mixed season overall. The Blues showed glimpses of potential throughout the campaign. However, they never really looked comfortable. Especially, considering the new players and their lack of team chemistry. Regardless, the Blues were able to finish in the Europa League spot securing 6th place.
Although, Manchester United’s miraculous FA Cup win over Manchester City would push them down to the UEFA Europa Conference League. Chelsea were looking good at the back end of the season. But, they decided to part ways with Mauricio Pochettino and appointed Enzo Maresca as the new man in-charge.
The Blues have been signing young prolific players over the last couple of seasons. They have already signed 17-year old Brazilian Estevao Willian who will be joining the Stamford Bridge in 2025. Marc Guiu is another impressive youngster bought by Chelsea.
Is Marc Guiu the right fit for Chelsea?
Many expect the 18-year old center forward to be the next big thing. Guiu made his senior debut for Barcelona in 2023. Furthermore, he managed to find the back of the next 23 seconds into his debut. Additionally, the goal would be the clincher for the Blaugrana as they would go on to win 1-0 against Ernesto Valverde’s Athletic Bilbao.
The 18-year old has made 7 appearances in La Liga and scored 2 goals already! Moreover, he has the traits of a classic #9 and is lethal around the penalty area. He was impressive for Spain in the U17 world cup having scored and made one goal in just 80 minutes of gametime. Moreover, he had a 100% dribble rate and won all of his duels. The forward was also the top scorer in the UEFA European U-17 Championship and was also included in the team of the tournament.
Guiu could be exactly who Chelsea needs. He is young, rising and willing to prove himself. Additionally, the exposure of playing in Europe’s top league would be highly beneficial for him. Undoubtedly, he will be looking to gain as many minutes as he can for the Blues. Maresca would be keen to employ the 18-year old on to the pitch.
18-year old signs for Chelsea: Jackson benefitted!
The signing of 18-year old Marc Guiu is a great news for Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson. The Blues bought the Senegalese from Villareal in 2023 for a fee of £32 million. Jackson has been impressive in his first season with the Blues. Although, the forward will be hoping to improve his finishing in front of goal.
Nevertheless, the 23-year old managed to score 17 goals and provide 6 assists to his team. Consequently, the Blues have given the vote of confidence to Jackson. Signing a younger striker in Guiu means that Jackson will be starting up front for the Blues.
Given it was Jackson’s first season, he is likely to improve if he keeps working hard. Maresca could employ Guiu in a more supporting role and the 18-year old could learn more from the likes of Christopher Nkunku.
On the other hand, Barcelona fans consider Guiu to be a little ahead of himself. Especially, due to his wage demands. The 18-year old demanded more wages than Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi who have been more instrumental for the Blaugrana.
While Chelsea have managed to secure Guiu, they have also tripled his salary. It would be interesting to see if Guiu is able to live up to his billing and prove he’s worth the price.
