Chelsea have faced road-block in the pursuit of Euro 2024 star Nico Williams. It seems that the Spanish winger is set to join Barcelona.
What really happened?
In this summer transfer window, Todd Boehly and Clearlake capital group were trying to sign some world-class attackers. The list includes Nico Williams, Victor Oshimhen, Elye Wahi, Jonathan David, and many more.
But the pursuit turned out to be unfruitful for Chelsea because they haven’t signed any of these big names till now. In the case of Nico Williams, the player is the main factor of the deal. Currently he won Euro 2024 with Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal.
Both of them are close friends on the pitch and of the pitch. Their combination helped the La Rojas to win Euro 2024. The Athletic Bilbao winger seems to enjoy playing with Lamine Yamal. So, Nico Williams will obviously want to join his friend in Barcelona.
That is why, this deal is looking difficult for Chelsea. If they really want to sign the winger, they will make it happen anyhow. For example, they snubbed Mykhailo Mudryk from the hands of Arsenal when it was almost certain that Arsenal is going to sign the Ukrainian winger on a permanent deal.
In the last moment, Chelsea offered more money to Shaktar Donesk and the Ukrainian club was forced to sell him to the West London outfit. So, this is how Chelsea have done all the things in transfer market.
Nico Williams transfer saga
In this summer transfer window, Athletic Bilbao set a price tag of £49m for Nico Williams. Barcelona have been tracking the young winger for a long time. The monitoring started when he was having a good season for the Basque province based club.
During the Euro 2024 tournament, Nico Williams got attention from Chelsea. According to CaughtOffside, it is being said that Chelsea were also ready to splash money for the winger but money was never a problem for this deal. The player himself wants to join the Catalans.
Previously we have seen that how a deal went against the Blues. Few seasons ago, Chelsea tried to sign Leeds United winger Raphinha on a permanent deal but the deal backscattered at them. Although Chelsea paid the transfer fees to Leeds United but the player didn’t agree personal terms with Chelsea because he wanted to play for Barcelona.
Later he agreed personal terms with Barcelona and signed a permanent deal for them. Eventually, Leeds United returned all the transfer fees to Chelsea. So, this thing can also happen with Nico Williams.
For the Spaniard, all the aspects are same like Raphinha. So it can be a same old story for the West London club. So, Chelsea have to be more cautious before spending money.
Multiple reports are claiming that Nico Williams has a price tag of £53m and Athletic Bilbao are not ready to sell him. In this season, he has attracted multiple clubs. It is being said that Chelsea are also interested in the player.
The Barcelona transfer makes sense for the Spaniard. If he joins the Catalan side, he will get the chance to play along Lamine Yamal and this combination will improve his performance.
If the young Spaniard joins Barcelona, he will play in the left wing. Lamine Yamal will accompany him from the right wing and Robert Lewandoski will play from the middle.
It seems that the German coach Hansi Flick will get the best out of this Barcelona squad. We have seen how Flick turned Bayern into a dangerous team. Especially Robert Lewandowski was the main player in that team.
