According to reports, Chelsea are leading the race to land Everton left-back Lucas Digne in the January transfer window.

Since the switch from Barcelona to Everton in the summer of 2018, Digne has become a key player for the toffees. Digne has been considered one of the best left-backs in the Premier League at times. The 28-year-old was even handed the captain’s armband for some of Everton’s starting fixtures this term.

But a recent fallout with the Toffees manager Rafael Benítez has seen his future at the club in great danger. The French left-back has not featured in even one match for the club since the 1st of December. Digne has just started 13 Premier League games this term under new manager Rafael Benítez. In this time he has failed to record a single goal or assist for his club. (stats via Tranfermarkt)

To add to the speculation Everton have completed and announced the signing of Ukrainian left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko from Dynamo Kyiv. With the singing of Mykolenko over the line, Digne’s time at Goodison Park seems to be over. Alongside Chelsea, Inter Milan have also shown interest in the services of the French left-back.

Chelsea the frontrunners to land Lucas Digne?

According to a report by Inter Dipendenza, the European champions are currently the frontrunners to land the Everton left-back in the January transfer window. Reports also suggest that Inter Milan were scouring Digne. But the left-back was never ‘a concrete target’ for the Italian outfit.

Reports coming out of Italy also suggest that Inter Milan have pulled out of the race to sign Lucas Digne. With Inter Milan pulling out of the race, Stamford Bridge looks like the ‘most likely destination’ for the left-back.

Chelsea left wing-back Ben Chilwell picked up a knee ligament injury in a Champions League clash with Juventus in November. Initially, he was expected to miss only two months of action. But Chilwell was required to undergo surgery on his knee ligament injury and could miss the rest of the season.

Backup left wing-back Marcos Alonso has filled for the absent Ben Chilwell. But with the England international potentially missing the rest of the season, Thomas Tuchel is considering recalling either Ian Maatsen or Emerson Palmieri from their loan spells away from the club. While Lucas Digne also remains a ‘transfer target’.
