Save the date, 20/4/2021 when football fans triumphed over the money hungry owners and toppled their financial monopoly. This could said to be a victory of football fans, the victory of their unity against the ones who wanted to ruin the beautiful game.
Fans to the rescue- Chelsea withdraws from ESL
Chelsea was one of the first clubs to announce that they were set to leave the proposed European Super League(ESL). Chelsea supporters had organized a huge protest before their game against Brighton to display their disapproval of the clubs decision and called for them to exit from ESL.
The result was they had to postpone the kickoff because the team bus wouldn’t be allowed to let through and club legend Petr Cech, also the technical advisor himself had to come and calm the tense atmosphere around Stamford Bridge.
Shortly afterwards it was announced that the Blues had started preparing documentation to request withdrawing from the ESL. Chelsea players also had shown their concerns after their meeting with Chairman Bruce Buck on Monday.
The Domino Effect
After Chelsea followed Manchester City and other clubs in the Premier League. Now it has been confirmed that all PL clubs have withdrawn from ESL. Andrea Agnelli, who is the president of Juventus no longer believes it is possible for the competition to go ahead and expects it to disband completely.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin welcomed the reversal, adding:
“I said yesterday that it is admirable to admit a mistake and these clubs made a big mistake.
But they are back in the fold now and I know they have a lot to offer not just to our competitions but to the whole of the European game.
The important thing now is that we move on, rebuild the unity that the game enjoyed before this and move forward together.”
What follows now is mixture of relief and joy. The game may have ended 0-0 but it was still a massive win for the fans.
