According to world-renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have Jules Kounde as their top target in the summer. Their failed pursuit of the French defender last summer might continue again next summer. Even though the deal was collapsed, the clubs remain interested in signing the Frenchman.
Sevilla wanted €65/70 million last summer for Jules Kounde. However, Chelsea had already made some recruitments which led to some second thoughts among the club. Kounde will undoubtedly strengthen the Chelsea defense but he also remains a top target for many clubs across Europe.
Chelsea have come to realize that they do not have as much depth in defense as they had thought. Christensen, Rudiger, and Azpilicueta have entered the final six months of their contract with Chelsea. Moreover, Thiago Silva is still playing at the top level at the age of 37. This shows that they either have to renew the contracts or sign new players.
Jules Kounde can solve these issues if he joins Chelsea. The Blues can profit from their sale of other defenders if they leave the club. Kounde is a young defender who can play for the club in the long term. However, Chelsea may have to stretch their budget in order to sign the Frenchman.
Why Chelsea should sign Jules Kounde in summer?
Koundé naturally plays as a right-sided central defender, but he is also capable of playing right-back due to his nimbleness, athleticism, and technical ability. He runs constantly, lung-busting runs there with the expertise of a professional full-back. However, at 5’11,” Koundé isn’t very tall or broad for a central defender but fights hard to win the ball back.
His speed gives him an advantage when chasing the ball, and his incredible leap allows him to win aerial duels. He may also burst past a few defenders and create an opportunity out of nowhere. Furthermore, he will allow Chelsea players to attack from further forward on the pitch.
He can only improve while playing with a better team surrounding him. Moreover, with Tuchel‘s guidance, he can become one of the best defenders in Europe at a very young age. However, he has to be ready to face some competition to start in the Chelsea squad. He has to deliver constantly to become the manager’s favorite and to reach where he wants to be.
Chelsea will have to break the bank to sign the French defender. Kounde will be a great addition to the Premier League as his pace will suit the demands of the league. However, Chelsea must be quick to secure the services of Kounde as they might face tough competition from the Elite European clubs for the Frenchman.
