Chelsea player rating: Blues pay for wastefulness in a 1-1 draw against Manchester United

Manchester United and Chelsea played out an eventful draw in their Premier League fixture at the Old Trafford. However, United had an escape as Chelsea failed to capitalize on their chances. The result finished-off United’s slim hopes of qualifying for the Champions League. On the other hand, Chelsea’s failure to win meant their third place is not yet secured. Chelsea player rating are here from their draw against United.

A lot of chances went begging in the first half for Chelsea. Kai Havertz and Timo Werner both failed to hit the target from close ranges. Finally, second half saw Chelsea take the lead on the hour mark. Reece James’ cross was awkwardly headed by Havertz, which landed into Marcos Alonso’s path who was free and unmarked in the box. The left-back hit a precise volley in the bottom corner to put the Blues ahead.

However, their lead was very short-lived as United responded within 2 minutes. The fans were treated to another sumptuous volley, this time from Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo controlled a smart flick from Nemanja Matic brilliantly in the box before hitting it on the volley. But Chelsea were the ones who almost found the winner, only for their squandering to leave them with a point. The player rating are as follows for Chelsea.

Chelsea player rating: Defence

Edouard Mendy- 6/10

Couple of saves, but rather untroubled for majority of time. However, helpless for the goal as Ronaldo’s striker was to powerful.

Cesar Azpilicueta- 6/10

Decent defensive performance from the captain. Since Reece James was upfront, Azpilicueta’s attacking game got limited.

Thiago Silva- 6/10

Not his usual near-perfect display. Managed to win only 3 of his 8 duels contested and failed to keep-up with Ronaldo for the goal.

Antonio Rudiger- 6/10

The man who is going to leave in the summer. However, Rudiger didn’t let affect his off-field matters on-field. Displayed full professionalism with a good game. Attempted 4 shots, and 8 accurate long-balls to his name.

Midfield

Reece James- 9/10

What a game from Reece James. 100% tackles won, 100% aerial duels won, 4/5 successful dribbles, 4 shots attempted, 4 chances created. Literally a world-class performance. A thorn in United defence. Easily earns highest rating out of any Chelsea player.

Jorginho- 6/10

Jorginho found his feet back in this game. A neat performance in the midfield, combined with a 94% pass completion rate. Moreover, read the movement between the lines brilliantly chipping in smart passes.

N’Golo Kante- 7/10

Should have scored with an early chance as his shot lacked precise placement and power. However, created a clear-cut chance for Havertz and improved his passes in the final third with 3 key-passes. Moreover, a 100% tackles and dribbles successful rate as well.

Marcos Alonso- 8/10

United’s failure to attack his flank provided him the freedom to massively contribute in Chelsea’s offence. As a result, score a goal from a perfect volley.

Attack

Mason Mount- 7/10

Given the freedom to run the show, and did exactly the same. Could have added to his assists tally with a lovely back-heel lay-off which was hit on the post by James.

Timo Werner- 5/10

Tried hard to write his name on the score-sheet, but was hugely uninvolved.

Kai Havertz- 4/10

Receives lowest rating as he was the most dreadful player for Chelsea on the pitch. Missed three clear-cut chances including a one on one.

Substitutes

Romelu Lukaku- 3/10

Replaced Havertz in the 70th minute. Disappointing performances from the Belgian are a routine now. Zero shots in 20 minutes in a game where Chelsea attacked fiercely.

Christian Pulisic- 4/10

Replaced Werner in the 70th minute. Pulisic tried his level best to offer the maximum attacking threat.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek- N/A

Replaced Kante in the 82nd minute.
