Chelsea target world class striker

According to The Chelsea Chronicle, Chelsea target Ollie Watkins as an alternative if they could not sign Victor Osimhen. It’s been a very long time now since Chelsea had a proper striker in their lineup. They have tried many options like Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku for the striker position. However none of them have able to provide consistent results to help Chelsea compete for trophies. Chelsea needs to a world class player on the striker position to seriously start competing for big trophies. Their situation is similar to Manchester City before signing Erling Haaland. The lack of proper striker is also effecting Chelsea in big matches. Last season Chelsea scored 77 goals which is pretty good for the season. However they still ended the season on sixth place. Chelsea relied on Cole Palmer for most of their goals. Palmer saved Chelsea multiple times last season.

We can also say Chelsea were lucky that Cole Palmer stepped up last season for them in the attack. Chelsea were more poor in their defensive record for the season. They gave away 63 goals which is one of their worst defensive record in the Premier League era. Mauricio Pochettino and his tactics helped Chelsea to be more aggressive and direct in their play style. However their poor defensive performance allowed them to bottled most of their matches. There was also the problem of injuries in the squad. Many Premier League clubs also suffered with injury crisis however most clubs adapted to the situation. Chelsea become very helpless due to their injury problems. They even played against Tottenham in the north London derby with only 14 first team players available. These injury problems did not allow Mauricio Pochettino to field a consistent starting eleven for majority of season.

Chelsea target for alternatives in striker position

Chelsea will hope that their players will stay fit this season. Last season their captain Reece James was out for majority of the season. Chelsea’s big signing Christopher Nkunku was also injured after giving some decent performances in the pre season and towards the end of the season. Now Chelsea will need to go big in the upcoming transfer window and they should start by buying a striker. First Chelsea should sell the suitable players in the club to avoid violating the FFP rules of Premier League. According to the new rules clubs can buy players only from the revenue after players sales.

Chelsea have been linked with Victor Osimhen for a very long time now. However his deal may collapse due to his high transfer fee. Chelsea are also exploring the option of signing Romelu Lukaku if he becomes available this summer. However Chelsea may not have to look overseas to solve their striker problem. They find good options in the Premier League as well. Ollie Watkins is another name that is linked with Chelsea. Watkins had his best year in Premier League last season where he helped Aston Villa finish top four and secure Champions League. Now Ollie Watkins situation will depend on whether Aston Villa will be ready to sell him for the right price.
