The long-dominant partnership of Ramos-Varane could come to an end, with Sergio Ramos in the final year of his contract. Zidane has already told his squad that he will be leaving after their current La-Liga season. Varane could then be motivated to leave and find a new challenge with many clubs from the Premier League interested.
Chelsea seems to be leading the race for Varane with Manchester United also involved. His contract expires in June 2022 and has no contract renewal talks going on right now. This could give Chelsea an advantage to land the French international.
The Red Devils have tried to sign Varane on a couple of occasions in the past. They have already broken a record for the most expensive defender by landing Harry Maguire and wouldn’t be afraid to do it again.
Chelsea centre-back partnership? Silva-Varane
The Blues are stacked in the centre-back position. They already have Thiago Silva, Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen, Toni Rudiger, and Kurt Zouma. Thiago Silva is set to be given a contract extension. Both the player and the club are happy with the current project. Fikayo Tomori might be leaving with AC Milan publicly stating they wish to keep the young centre-back.
Varane needs an experienced defender along with him and Thiago Silva could be the perfect partner for him with his calm presence and vast experience.
Chelsea have inquired about Varane and Real Madrid was thinking about selling the centre-back this summer should the right offer come in. They have already found a replacement with David Alaba set to join them on a free transfer from Bayern Munich.
The club knows that the French international has various appeasing offers from elsewhere and is considering whether they want to let him leave for free in 2022 or cash in on him now.
