Recently Chelsea player Enzo Fernandez have been accused of chanting disrespectful words after the victory of Copa America 2024.
What happened with Chelsea player Enzo Fernandez?
Argentina have won the Copa America 2024 under the captaincy of Lionel Messi. Players like Angel Di Maria, Enzo Fernandez, Lautaro Martinez, Rodrigo de Paul helped the Argentines to win the Copa America final against Columbia.
After the triumph against Columbia, the entire Argentina squad started to celebrate the victory. All players participated in the celebration. At one side it was a joyous moment for the Argentina team, but all the players were sad because it was the last game for legendary player Angel Di Maria.
Among these mixed emotions, Enzo Fernandez and some players were singing a song which mentioned that France team do not have their own players because all of their players are from Angola. These words symbolize racism and disrespect towards football.
Chelsea player Enzo Fernandez also chanted some homophobic words which indicated the relationship between French star Kylian Mbappe and transgender model Ines Rau. So, the chants were racist, disrespectful and homophobic.
While Enzo Fernandez was busy in chanting racist words, one of his Argentine teammates made a video of it and posted in the social media. This video created a massive storm in the social media. People saw the video and most of them acted furious way.
Till now Chelsea player Enzo Fernandez has not joined the squad for the pre-season tour. His fellow south American Moises Caicedo has joined the Chelsea squad in California.
Reaction to Enzo’s disrespectful behavior
The entire football community has criticized the action of Chelsea player Enzo Fernandez. His Chelsea teammates such as Wesley Fofana, Malo Gusto, Recce James, David Datro Fofana unfollowed him on Instagram.
French defender Wesley Fofana also commented “Uninhibited racism” on the disrespectful video. David Datro Fofana also liked this comment. This action indicates the unity of players against racism. Previously we have seen multiple players who got victimized of this racism act.
Players like Vinicius Jr, Bukayo Saka, Son Heung Min all have faced racism in some of their career. Nowadays FIFA have taken initiatives to stop racism and even the tag “Say No To Racism” is also attached on the jersey of every Champions League team.
Although there are multiple rules against racism and these kinds of things, but players are being victimized again and again. These types of acts are not acceptable in football. Sports always unite a person to another person, and it teaches us how to make friendship.
When everyone is trying to unite people with the help of football, these types of disrespectful behavior destroy the purpose of sports.
Chelsea’s action against Enzo Fernandez
Till now Chelsea haven’t published any official statement against Enzo Fernandez. In a press conference, Enzo Maresca opened up his thoughts on Enzo’s recent action and said that he didn’t want to add any new comment because the situation was already clear. According to Metro, Enzo Fernandez added that the Argentine didn’t has any bad intentions.
On the other hand, Chelsea skipper Recce James said that if Enzo Fernandez would have done the same thing in Chelsea, he would have faced serious difficulties.
Although Enzo Fernandez has apologized for his actions, but all football fans are expecting a serious punishment from Chelsea side. If the club try to defend the player, it will not make a good impact in the football community.
Enzo Fernandez has always been a controversial figure at Stamford Bridge. For example, he got engaged into a serious duel against former Chelsea player Mason Mount. After the match, Enzo Fernandez behaved in an inappropriate manner in front of the former Chelsea man.
