Christian Horner names the team which has made a “big step”

Ferrari 2023

Red bull boss Christian Horner has picked his team which he thinks has made huge progress coming in 2023.

The 2023 pre-season testing has officially ended. The Red bull side is looking strong and prepared like ever for this season. Both the red bull drivers have topped two days in the three days testing programme.

While one can argue that the teams do not perform to their full potential in testing, considering the last season and the pace, the Milton Keynes-based squad is looking all prepared to defend their 2023 title.

Regardless, Christian Horner was asked to pick a rival team between Mercedes and Ferrari who has an upper hand in the fight. To this Horner said:

“Very difficult to say. I mean Ferrari look like they’re quick, Mercedes’ form [is] difficult to read at the moment. Are they holding something back? We’ll see this time next week; I think all will become clear.”

The Briton then went on to praise the Aston Martin side claiming the team has made a “big step” forward:

“Yeah, I think they’ve made a big step,” Horner said.

“It looks like their concept of car has moved them forward and they look like they’re not too far away, so Fernando [Alonso] in particular looks very competitive.”

Horner earlier also talked about Aston Martin being a team to watch out for this year.

Horner explains the different testing approach

Most teams in the testing split their drivers for the two sessions giving one driver the morning and the other the afternoon session. Red bull, however, opted to give both of its drivers one full day in the car. Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez split duties only on Friday.

Verstappen drove the car full day on Thursday and Perez on Saturday. Explaining this approach, Horner commented:

“I think our preference is: once a driver’s into a rhythm and their engineers are, rather than breaking it over the lunch hour, to continue that theme during the whole of the day.

“Of course, that’s different for every team… it’s more suited to the plans that we had at this particular test.”
