As with soap operas, in the world of football, where tactical nuance mingles with soap-opera drama, Arsenal’s latest injury crisis only feels like the most perfect cliffhanger. Mikel Arteta may not have many active strikers to choose from, with Kai Havertz sidelined. Diego Costa, a league legend in the Premier League, Arsenal’s most chaotic savior, and now a free agent.
But hold the champagne. William Gallas knows both Chelsea and Arsenal inside out and believes the addition of Costa may help improve the squad’s morale — before he comes to blows with Arteta like two bulls in a china shop.
Costa’s Track Record: A Trophy Magnet… with a Side of Drama
Let’s not downplay Costa’s resume. This guy is closer to dimpled than most believed. His Chelsea era saw him find the net an impressive 52 times and in 89 Premier League appearances, and the Blues won more than a few trophies while defenders resorted to the couch.
Costa doesn’t just have goals and glory, he has life and fire, and on occasion an argument on the pitch. That is the sort of thing fans love, but Arteta? Maybe not so much. Arsenal should manage to avoid having Costa’s temper flare up more quickly than their squad harmony can burn out faster.
Would he Fit In? Gallas Thinks… Probably Not
William Gallas didn’t shy away from admitting that the big personality of Costa could turn Arsenal’s dressing room into a bit of a reality TV. Gallas clearly did not see Costa existing well under Arteta, as he himself began thinking that he could lift spirits but would not get on with the manager with glares at half time.
Chelsea fans would likely riot if Chelsea’s beloved Royal household troublemaker put on Arsenal red anyway. Tactical plans are not the only things which are loyalties.
