Cristiano Ronaldo has made it abundantly clear, that he wants to leave Manchester United this season. United have failed to qualify for Champions League football this season. Several reports are reporting this lack of Champions League football as the reason for Ronaldo’s move. Cristiano Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes is pushing hard for his client to go to a club where Champions League football is available this summer. However, United have also made it abundantly clear too: Ronaldo is not for sale this season.

Ronaldo made a comeback to his boyhood club this summer in anticipation of recreating the success he had with them. However, all he found was disappointment. United slipped to sixth place in the League, this meant that they were ineligible for Champions League this season. Ronaldo has been clinical for Manchester United. He was the club’s leading goal scorer last season with 24 goals to his name across all competitions. However, even his stellar performance couldn’t guarantee United Champion league football.

Erik Ten Hag wants to work with Cristiano Ronaldo

The arrival of Erik Ten Hag has brought winds of changes to Manchester United. Erik Ten Hag agreed to join United only if his requirements were met. The list includes full control of the transfer process and a major say in the way the club does business with and for the players. United are building a team to regain their former glory in the league this season. They have signed Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez this summer. Moreover, Erik Ten Hag is also keen to keep Ronaldo at Old Trafford this summer.

The manager is even confident that Ronaldo will extend his contract to 2024. Speaking to Manchester Evening News, Ten Hag said;

“I am well informed he also has also an option, eh?. “Yes, he could stay beyond this season, but to be honest, of course I have signed here for three years, but in football it’s short-term as well. We have to win from the start. So I don’t look that far ahead. I have a strategy, it’s a process, it takes time, but in the end we have to make sure from the outset there is a winning team.”

Cristiano Ronaldo is yet to join the squad for their pre-season this summer. The club is citing ‘personal reasons for his absence and Ten Hag also confirmed the same when asked about the striker’s return date. Moreover, Ten Hag also stressed that there is nothing to worry about regarding the striker’s fitness as he is a “top professional”.

“The same status as last week in Bangkok: no change. I cannot tell you (when he will be back at Carrington). No change in the issue. He is training. I think we all know Ronaldo is a top professional and he will be fit. That is the last concern I have.”
