According to the reports, Crystal Palace agreed to a fee of €10 million (£8.5 million) for Chris Richards. Other than the upfront payment, the deal also contains an add on clause of €3 million (£2.5 million) for the Bayern Munich defender.
The US defender spent the last season on loan at the Bundesliga club TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Bayern Munich recently completed the transfer of the Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus. The Old Lady accepted a bid of £68 million from the Munich club. Also, with the completion of this deal, Matthijs de Ligt will be the 2nd highest transfer of the club in monetary terms. As per reports, de Ligt will sign a 5 year deal for the Bundesliga club.
Now with the arrival of Matthijs de Ligt, Richards will fall further down the pecking order for the Bavarian club. Not that he was ever the first choice ever since his arrival but now after the signing of de Ligt’s he could see his future more clearly at Bayern and thought it would be in his best interest to depart and look for game time elsewhere.
Crystal Palace signs Chris Richard
Chris Richards joined Bayern Munich on loan from the MLS club FC Dallas in 2018. Soon he signed a permanent deal in January of 2019. But since that, the versatile defender could make only 5 senior apps for the club. He also spent two loan spells for Hoffenheim. For Hoffenheim in both his stints, he made 30 apps overall. He also earned 8 caps for the USA National Football Team.
Chris Richards will be the 4th signing for Crystal Palace in this summer transfer window. Before him, the Patrick Vieira led side bought Malcolm Ebiowei, England international Sam Johnstone and Cheick Doucoure. Richards can be a good signing for Vieira as besides playing as a defender, he can also play in multiple positions.
