Dhoni’s appointment as a mentor, a strategic move?

2021 WT20 in UAE looked like the perfect opportunity for Kohli to win his 1st ICC title across all formats. Indian fans were ecstatic about MS Dhoni being back in the Indian dressing room as the mentor for the tournament. A mighty squad with strong team management, it seemed like the Indian team will relieve the 2007 dream in UAE.

But the campaign was nothing short of a shock as India failed to even qualify for the knockouts and faced a severe defeat against arch-rivals Pakistan for the first time in any World Cup encounter. The World T20 was the last assignment for Head Coach Ravi Shastri and captain Virat Kohli. While Kohli stepped down as the T20I skipper, he was scrapped from his ODI captaincy prior to the Proteas series.

Recently a controversy erupted recently when former fast bowler Atul Wassan asserted that the Indian camp was divided into two power centers with Shastri and Kohli being the ultimate bosses in Indian cricket. The decision of BCCI to include Dhoni was a strategic move to keep things under control. Wassan in his fiery remarks said –

“I’ll tell you. Dhoni was brought in just to keep some balance because everybody had a feeling that Virat and Ravi Shastri were totally handling, selecting, managing whoever they wanted to play, They were controlling Indian cricket. So, they (BCCI) thought somebody should come in with some kind of value who would just monitor that there is a balance. I think they messed up greatly in the World Cup….Here in India, once you have played a lot of cricket and you become a demi-god, the player expects to get some lineage, get some special treatment. This system needs to change, If you are not gelling well with the organisation and you have got a better option, players also have to stop feeling low or let down. Don’t expect too much from the board because once you have a tap on the shoulder, you have got to take it as a man.”

The Indian Team saw some big changes in the team management with Rahul Dravid as India’s new Head Coach and Kohli being replaced with Rohit Sharma as the new ODI captain. India currently is playing a 3 match Test series followed by a 3 match ODI series in the rainbow nation.
