Did Barcelona’s Joan Laporta just show the door of exit to Frenkie De Jong?

Barcelona, Six Sports

Barcelona president Joan Laporta made known the club’s situation this summer. He revealed that the club would have to sell key players in order to manage their finances this season.

This declaration came amidst reports that Dutchman Frenkie De Jong could leave the Catalan club for Manchester United this summer.

The ex-Ajax man has been heavily linked to the Red Devils in recent weeks. Moreover, there is a possibility of a reunion with his former manager Erik Ten Hag at the Old Trafford.

The Dutch pair enjoyed a healthy relationship during their time at Ajax.

However, there were reports this week that United’s opening bid for the creative midfielder has been rejected by the Catalan club.

That being said, it is understood that De Jong’s signing is being prioritized by Ten Hag. Moreover, with the likes of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic leaving, Ten Hag is desperate to bring the 25-year-old to Old Trafford.

This he hopes would bolster United’s midfield this summer.

Despite their rejection of the opening bid, Barca’s president has confirmed that they would be open to selling players in this transfer window.

Laporta said to BarcaTv,” If our economic situation requires the sale of an important player, we are ready for that.”

Barcelona looks to be in deep waters in regard to their finances

Barcelona have been facing this financial problem for some time now.

This was evident last summer as well when they were unable to register Memphis Depay and Sergio Aguero for some time after signing them.

This has been because of the strict wage regulations that have been placed on the club by La Liga.

The federation imposed the restrictions because of Barca’s precarious financial situation. They have a huge debt amounting to €1billion.

This restricted them from renewing the contract with Lionel Messi last summer.

The situation has not improved this summer. This is the reason they are unable to register their new free transfer signings of Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen.
