Diego Costa has made his mind clear on a possible return to Chelsea as the Blues look for reinforcements due to injury crisis.
Chelsea and Arsenal looking for options and Diego Costa is a free agent
Both Arsenal and Chelsea are currently without any pure number 9s at the moment. Due to injuries to Kai Havertz and Nicolas Jackson, both the English clubs are looking for available options. With that, Diego Costa is also now a free agent. There’s so much can happen in the next few weeks.
Costa has previously made his thoughts clear regarding a return to the Premier League. He could be an option for many English clubs, who are in need of attackers. Although the transfer window is closed but being a free agent they can sign the experienced forward.
Costa has already spent four-and-a-half years with the Blues until 2017. He recently played football for the Brazilian club Gremio. This year in January, his contract with Gremio ended. And now heโs a free agent.
Even though the transfer window has closed, he can still be an option for several other teams in England. A numerous of English teams are in dire need of attacking choices. with Chelsea and Arsenal as a few examples.
The club from West London knows that ex-forward Diego Costa is a free agent. And the fans also believe that perhaps it is time to encourage his return to Stamford Bridge.
The 36-year-old is nowhere near the poacher he was in front of goal during his time at Chelsea. However, in these dire conditions, he will certainly have a role to fulfill.
They could bring him in for a short period. It could be valuable for both parties if he were signed for the rest of the season.
As he is a proper 9, the Blues can offer him an opportunity. And they have no players left for that specific position. In fact, since Costa’s departure in 2017, he has been the last successful proper number 9 the club has had.
Diego Costa on his return to Chelsea
Costa released a statement in August 2017 that he had no desire of returning back to Chelsea. He said that after falling out of favour with the teams officials.
He said, via Federacao Sergipana de Futebol and as quoted by the Evening Standard: “My destination is already made. I must return to Atletico Madrid.
“It turns out that there is the impasse that Chelsea does not want to release me. But I believe that this situation will be resolved now on my return to Spain.”
In an interview with the MailOnline, he said: “In January, things happened with the coach. I was on the brink of renewing my contract and they put the breaks on it. I suspect the manager was behind it. He asked for that to happen.
“His ideas are very fixed and clear. I have seen the sort of person he is. He has his own opinion and that will not change. I respect him as a great coach. He has done a good job and I can see that, but as a person, no. He is not a coach who is very close with his players and he doesn’t possess charisma.”
Costa joining Chelsea was a mistake?
In 2018, Diego Costa said that it was a mistake joining the West London side. In a interview with Spanish outlet Marca and as quoted by the Metro, he said: “It was a very bad moment, but it wasn’t my fault. I was wrong” going to Chelsea, because of their way of dealing with things.”
Then, in 2022, the Spanish forward joined Wolves in a shock move and returned to the Premier League on a short-term deal. One of the things he said after his return to England was, “I always thought that the Premier League was the best out there, the best in the world.”
Author’s Opinion
It will be very much impossible that Costa joins Chelsea, given their eventful history. But the fans are not ruling out on seeing him in the blue colors again. If it happens, it would be one of the most shocking moves in the football history for sure.
