Diogo Jota responds to the comments about his penalty against Newcastle United

Liverpool star winger Diogo Jota opens up on his controversial penalty, few weeks ago. There have been some criticism for Jota after him going down against Newcastle United. Former English International, Alan Shearer, criticised the Portuguese for his action in the box to win a penalty for Mo Salah.

Consequently, Liverpool sealed a thrilling 4-2 triumph against the Magpies at Anfield. Moreover, after the game, Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka admitted there was contact with Jota and it was a penalty. Infact, there seems no reason otherwise for the Portuguese to hit the deck when an empty goal was gaping.

A debate continued for days on the controversial decision by the referees. The forward, though, merely shrugs his shoulders when asked about the somewhat curious outrage.

Listen, of course I saw some comments from ex-players and people who are paid to talk about situations. The only thing I can say is even the keeper said it was a touch and I didn’t feel the conditions to stay up. So that’s it.

Would I rather put the ball in the net than see Mo take a penalty? Yes, of course. That’s what I like to do – to score goals. That’s all I have to say.”

Diogo Jota is back in business for Liverpool

Jota has certainly found his form back from the previous campaign. Though, he went goalless for almost a year, with his last coming against Leeds in April. Since ending that barren run, only Salah has bagged more for Liverpool than the 16 Jota has managed.

There has been competition from a strike force of Salah, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz that has fired Liverpool clear at the top of the Premier League. Now with Salah missing on due to AFCON, it is the responsibility of rest of these forwards to continue running like till now.
