SONY SPORTS NETWORK has come up with a special documentary to celebrate India’s triumph over the Australians in the iconic 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.

India had never won a Test series in Australia before their momentous tour in 2018-19. The 2020-21 series, however, was a test on another level. India had to repeat their success to prove its critics wrong.

In 2019-20, India faced an Australian Team that lacked the services of modern-day giants Steve Smith And David Warner. The tour of 2020-21 was also India’s biggest series after cricket resumed post the first wave of the pandemic. Amidst all challenges, the Indian Team reached down under to consolidate their top spot in the world of Test Cricket.

“India’s win in Australia early last year will go down as one of the greatest wins in Indian cricket history. To pick themselves up after the dismissal with their lowest ever test score of 36 and then to beat a rampant home team is a tribute to the determination shown by the players and the leadership roles played by the captain Rahane, coach Ravi Shastri and his support group. I was privileged to be there and see a golden chapter being written in the history of Indian cricket.” – Sunil Gavaskar.

Humiliation followed by an epic comeback, a series for the ages

The 1st Test in Adeliade saw a disastrous batting collapse from India. The star-studded unit got all-out for 36-10. It was the worst ever batting performance by India in a Test innings in their history. The host eventually hammered the Virat Kohli-led side, eyeing to clinch the series and avenge their humiliation in 2018-19.

India missed the services of their regular leader Virat Kohli for the following matches after the veteran had to leave for India over paternity leave. Experts and pundits predicted the Australian to achieve an easy victory after the Adelaide Test.

Under the able leadership of Ajinkya Rahane, India pulled off a miraculous comeback to shock the hosts in MCG and the Gabba. Multiple players suffered injuries in the course of the Tests, adding way more hurdles in the way to achieve glory. But the team played like a unit that believed in its potential and beat all odds to accomplish the impossible.

Young sensations like Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, T Natarajan reaffirmed the might of the bench strength. The series victory by 2-1 was hailed as one of the greatest Test victories in the history of the game. The injury-hit Indian camp breached Australia’s bastion of Gabba. They became the first nation to win a Test in 32 years and 2 months. The series was a witness to so many age-old records being broken by a bunch of young cricketers.
