Borussia Dortmund youngster Gio Reyna may have to say good bye to the German club this summer. Gio Reyna who is on a loan spell with Nottingham Forest had a nightmare of a season. Borussia Dortmund had a great season and surpassed all the expectations. After a struggling season in Bundesliga where they managed to secure fifth position the expectations were very low. However Dortmund surpassed all the expectations and shattered all the criticism after reaching the Champions league final. Borussia Dortmund had a very young and inexperienced squad this season. Their squad also consisted of old players like Nicolas Sule and Mat Hummels. Everyone deemed them to underperform or crash out in the season early on. Also with Xavi Alonso’s Bayern Leverkusen taking the Bundesliga on storm their was hardly any chance for any team to shine. However football being the most unpredictable sport again.
Borussia Dortmund who are famous for their transfer business of developing young players pulled off a miracle. After selling players like Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham recently there was surely loss of some real quality. Dortmund also ended up losing the chance to win the Bundesliga last season after losing on the final matchday. This already made them suffer plenty of criticism last season. However the club showed great mentality with all the setbacks and gave the fans an amazing champions league run. In the champions league final Dortmund gave a great performance as well. The first half was dominated by the German team and they made great chances as well. Borussia Dortmund youngsters also gave a tough time to the Real Madrid defense and were just unlucky their chances could not be converted. This was supposed to be Dortmund legend Marco Reus final games for the club.
Dortmund youngster may have played his last game for the club
Dortmund’s champions run started from the group of death. They were in the group with Paris Saint Germain, AC Milan and Newcastle United. Although they were not the favourites they end up qualifying with their solid defence and counter attacking football. Dortmund’s weakness in the champions league final against Real Madrid was their midfield. The German club was heavily dependent on Emre Can to defend pockets of space on both sides of midfield. Borussia Dortmund’s manager Edin Terzic make sure Real Madrid cannot exploit these pockets of space in midfield. Thus for this purpose Dortmund played high press game to avoid Real Madrid’s backline move the ball for too long. Niclas Füllkrug did a good job along with other Dortmund players to limit Madrid’s time on the ball. This approach worked out pretty well after Real Madrid registered only two shots in first half.
Now Dortmund wants to seriously improve their squad for next season and for this they decided to get rid of youngster Gio Reyna. The American youngster made a move to Nottingham Forest after lack of game for Dortmund. Everyone had high expectations from the 21 year old youngster to perform in English football. However his loan spell proved to be a disaster for the fans. Over the half-season, Reyna only appeared in 10 games for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, including two starts, for a total of just 230 minutes. Following this loan move we can conclude that this will be the end of Gio Reyna’s Dortmund career. Reyna when asked about his future recently said: “Obviously, just looking forward to next season, I just want to go somewhere where I’m valued and get to play a lot and have an important role on the team.”
