Eden Hazard has been one of the finest players The Premier League has ever seen. However, a move from Chelsea to Real Madrid ruined the golden period of Hazard. The Belgian was a revelation and fan favourites at the Stamford Bridge. But his injuries during his days at Santiago Bernabeu were a major cause for the fall of one of the most prolific dribblers on the ball.
The 33-year old has sensationally claimed that only Lionel Messi was a greater footballer than he was. The Belgian did take time to acknowledge the legacy of Cristiano Ronaldo, but also suggested he was better than the Portuguese superstar in ‘pure football terms’.
His time at Lille marked him as the most exciting youngsters in Europe eventually securing him a move to West London in 2012. As a Premier League player, the winger is certainly on the list of the greatest. However, when it comes to comparisons with Ronaldo and Messi, Hazard may lag behind.
He was asked about the two best players of the generation in an interview and was lauding for both. He said on Messi,
“Individually, Messi is perhaps the only one. I loved watching the Barcelona player, less so at the end, but he’s the greatest in history. It’s impossible to take the ball away from him.”
While everyone will agree with his assessment about the Argentine, his statement about the Portuguese is one giving an eye.
“Cristiano [Ronaldo] is a bigger player than me but, in terms of pure football, I honestly don’t think so.”
Looking at the stats, the Belgian stands nowhere near Cristiano Ronaldo throughout his career. However, in terms of a technical player, his claim may be worth weighing and attractive. The Belgian announced to hang his boots this season after being unable to cope up with his injuries at Real Madrid.
