If someone asks a child about his favourite Liverpool player right now, the answer is most likely going to be either Mo Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, or Virgil Van Dijk. These three are the face of the Reds currently. However, the irony is the club has made no such efforts to retain the trio till now.
Their contracts are expiring at the end of this season and the club are in a dilemma regarding the contract situation. At the moment the team is flying high under new boss Arne Slot. The Reds have registered nine wins in ten games. Fans were skeptical about Slot-ball succeeding legendary Klopp but so far it’s been really good.
The contract situation of the players is the biggest worry for the fans right now. Liverpool haven’t even prepared draft renewals for the player’s contracts. If the club fails to act soon, the players will be forced to agree on personal terms with other clubs and leave Anfield for a free transfer.
Also, the club scouts haven’t found the replacement for Salah, Trent or VVD. If the trio leave the club this summer, the result will be inevitably “catastrophic”. Arne Slot will also be left hanging in a difficult situation leading to an ugly situation in the dressing room.
There has been negotiations between the club and the representatives of all three players, but they have not found any common ground.
What do the players desire?
Van Dijk has repeatedly told that he wishes to stay at Anfield and compete at the highest level. He expressed his desire to stay at Liverpool in previous international break. He feels that he is physically fit to play at the top and lead his club and country. The 33-year old wants to stay atleast for the next two years at the club.
Mo Salah has remained coy when he was asked about his future at Liverpool. After the 3-0 win against rivals Manchester United, Salah revealed that the club has not approached him for a renewal yet. He is focusing on this season and is leaving the contract situation to his agent and the club.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he says;
“Nobody in the club talked to me yet about contracts, so I’ve said ‘OK, I’ll play my last season and in the end we’ll see. It’s not up to me, nobody talked to me from the club, but we’ll see.”
Trent is a Scouse since his childhood. His emotions about the club run deeper than any other player at Liverpool. Although he has mostly remained silent about his contract situation, he expressed his desire to captain the club once in his life. He is a big fan of the club and his aim is to win as many trophies he can with the Reds.
Speaking in an interview, he says;
“I want to be a Liverpool player this season (as a minimum) is what I will say. “The most important thing is always trophies. I want to win trophies.”
Basically, the club has made no approach so far to renew the contracts of these key players. Leaving it for late might be “embarassing” and a “messy” situation for the club.
21-year old defender signs new contract at Liverpool
Liverpool defender, Jarell Quansah, has signed a new contract at the club. He has risen through the ranks at the club’s academy. The 21-year old has now 35 caps for the Reds first team.
Quansah boasted the third most blocks and won 88% of his tackles in all competitions last season. However, under Slot he’s only played two games and he had tamed Ipswich Town and West Ham’s fiery attack superbly.
The 21-year old admitted that new boss has been very helpful and believes that he can develop his skills to help them win.
Liverpool are also reportedly in talks with Ibrahima Konate for a new contract. However, Arnold and Salah’s situation is still in the mix.
Quansah last signed a contract in May 2023 which was around three months before his debut. While his future was secured as his last deal ran until 2027. Liverpool’s Sporting director is a big fan of the 21-year old, therefore offered him this contract to showcase the club’s faith in the young lad for the foreseeable future until 2028.
